Would I want to use my D/K-CAN cable or the ICOM? I'm worried that sending over D-CAN will take hours?

Either would work. D-CAN should take 20 minutes or so. Dunno about icom, but that would probably be a little faster.

Icom uses ethernet from laptop to the icom (works over wifi! though i don't trust it), fiber optic link from icom to the car, and then uses a body gateway built into the radio to go from the fiber link to CAN. its theoretically about 5 or 10 times faster than k-can, though i didn't have the radio connected the last time i was working on things so i used d-can.

If it is only 15 minutes, i'll probably just use d-can, since i have more experience with that.

If there's any testing i can do before i install the 3-stage, i can likely do that this weekend. 3-stage install will probably have to wait a couple weeks due to a lot of work projects coming up, though.

I think you could flash it without having the 3 stage installed. Won't hurt anything.

Well I guess the only thing to see would be if it generates any errors or drive ability issues on a real car. I don't know if it's advisable to run a 3-stage tune on a 1-stage manifold though -- hass would know better about that.

Flashing back to a 1 stage tune should take only a couple minutes either way

I don't think it would cause any problems. You might get an error code for the DISA flaps missing, but it would run just fine.

Hass, should I just buy something to flash the car or should I just drive up there? I know you're super busy so whatever's easier for yourself.

all you really need is a D-can cable and WinKFP.

I think before anyone rushes into this though, we should do a bit more testing. Terra has bench flashed his successfully, I haven't tried mine yet - and you'll probably need to use WinKFP in Expert mode (not that difficult, but you need to know specific settings). I think a step by step would be a good thing to follow (it just doesn't exist yet).

Yeah I've done a lot of bench testing and have gone back and forth a few times - but that's just me so far. Probably should bench test on another DME with another computer and another cable just to make sure something about my setup isn't unique.

Another point to note is that most of my testing was either done in K-line mode or D-CAN mode with modified firmware for the cable. So there is a chance that an unmodded cable on a real car won't be as fast or reliable (ICOM should be fine though).

Gotcha! Well then I better get that stuff.

Is WinKFP a software available online somewhere? Someone said I need windows xp to operate that stuff.

don't necessarily need WinXP. There are links to it in the coding section - basically, it's part of BMW Tools. Just get the latest version of that.

Speaking of your tune, planning a follow up? 7whp/10wtq is pretty good for a stock 330i, but it's been 3 years and you've learned a bunch, right?

I did one in the summer - with my A/C running full blast on a hot day, lol (I'd forgotten it was on). Car was heat soaking pretty bad too, it was over 90 in the shop.

Still made the same amount of power as it did on a cool day without A/C running - it's possible I could go back but I'd like to do it before summer.
