Well after getting the lifters replaced the ticking is back after a few days. So had to reschedule for a new appointment in about 10 days due to no loaners till then. I assume they will replace the cylinder head now. Guy said it will take about 4 days. Stinks....

Yeah that's about how long mine took. Might have left it an extra day to continue driving the loaner tho.

Same here with intermittent ticking, but I've found that after the motor has been running for more than 20 minutes at highway speeds (i.e. ~80mph here in FL) it goes away.

Mentioned it while I has having my HPFP replaced last week, and they couldn't find anything specific. If it gets more pronounced I'll make an appt to have them find it and get rid of it, but until then I'm happy.

Cheers, AB

I had all lifters replaced in early Feb of this year. Problem seem to be solved. However I started noticing the ticking coming back. Took it back, now waiting to get the entire head replaced. Hopefully that will be the end of it.

I just took my car in for service yesterday. Told the SA about the ticking noise. So she had the lifters replaced and for some odd reason it seems like lifters being replaced did not work. Now I have to schedule a new appointment. The SA told me if I heard the noise again, then the dealership would replace the head.

I had that ticking problem during my winter storage session here in Montreal. After reading this thread it got me worried and I didn't know what to expect. An oil change was due and booked my appointment at the dealership. After the fresh new oil change; the car was perfect! No ticking issues. Felt brand new! Sucks that people actually do replace their lifters

Just want to say thanks for the info in this thread. My wife just got her cylinder head replaced a week ago after the HV replacements didn't resolve the ticking issue. Coincidentally, it was also the last week of warranty on her car (E90 330i). As you can see from my post count, I don't post very much, but I do read quite a bit.

another casualty of ticking noise. as soon as gas gets to 1/4 tank, sounds like an 87 daiwoo. Disappointed BMWs shouldnt sound like this. just over 40k miles. manual transmission on it as well. taking it to dealer.

Here is the sound I captured today from my 325.. Just discovered yesterday. I noticed this started to happen as soon as it got real hot here. Sounds a little different from the tapping videos I saw so far. This something different or is it the exhaust lifters? It seems to go away after driving.

Anyone? I do plan on going to the dealer, but wanted clarification on if this in fact is the "problem" with the HVA's.

Sounds similar, but not as loud as my wife's was before getting the cylinder head replaced.

Man, I have a feeling that when I take it in they will either say they dont hear it, or its not loud enough.

Make sure the car is cold when you tell them to listen to it, because most of the time that's when it happens.

On my 06 330i with around 33K miles and a few months AFTER lifter replacement I got some loud ticking one day. I made an appt with the dealer and of course the ticking went away. Had them keep it overnight to get a cold start and no repro so no fix...

I'm almost out of warranty (1 more month) and don't want this to bite me after then.

Anyone know how much is a new head?

Not my car but mine sounded exactly like this:

Thanks.

Most often but not exclusively. My dealer didn't hear mine until the engine was warm.

That's my car.. it was doing that after a 100mile highway run from norfolk, va to richmond, va. It's at the dealer now and they're submitting a PUMA case to replace the head (lifters replaced in 11/09).

A brand new head is over 4,000 USD. Try video taping it and see if that helps your case.

Here is my situation:

Mine is E90 2006 with 48K miles currently. Recently I was drive my car in short distance for working 5 miles a day for the last 3 weeks. Last week I notice the ticking noise and it is exact same as previous post in this thread.

But last weekend I drove around 200 miles and after that trip, the ticking noise is gone. I cannot hear from Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

I'm pretty sure that is either hydraulic value lifter (HVA) or cylinder head issue, but the thing is I cannot produce now.

Not sure how to reproduce again, if the sound does not produce again, I cannot ask dealer to replace the part for me.

Any suggestion??

What I've noticed is this: I have 2 e90's. One get's driven about 10 miles a day IF that. The other get's around 40. The one that drives more hasn't ticked a tick in it's life, but the one that doesn't go anywhere had the head replaced. I'm thinking that there could be a correlation with the car not getting fully warmed up/not being driven enough to prevent the ticking from happening and that's why it happened (most of the time) when my car was cold.

Take a video or sound clip next time it happens and take that to the dealer.

This is what I have found is the most reliable way to reproduce the ticking.

Let the car sit overnight. Then drive or even run the engine for a short while. Maybe at most 5 mins, but not very short either. Wait an hour. Start the car again, if it is not ticking immediately, wait a few mins. It usually starts ticking after getting a bit warmer.

The trick is running the engine for a short while and turning it off. This seems to be causing the lifters to drain from oil. Just sitting overnight, if the last run of the engine was a long one with high revs it won't usually cause it to tick the next morning start up.

Is there anyone who have the lifter noise even after head replacement? I read recently in a BMW magazine even head replacement wasn't all the cure, but I am not sure.

The real question to me, how bad is this for the engine? If it was only benign ticking, I wouldn't be worried that much. But sometimes it sounded like someone was hitting with a hammer inside the engine. I don't think that can be good.
