The car is now at Stratstone Chesterfield after a weekend stop at Sytner Sheffield. BMW Emergency recovered it to Sytner but they're not approved Aviva repairers hence the trip on a low loader to Chesterfield. I would have preferred Sytner but I didn't want the additional £200 excess to pay. Plus Aviva would have just drawn it all out if I'd used Sytner. Thanks must go to Sytner though for not charging any storage and cleaning the car up before collection by Stratstone. Sytner also confirmed that I'm only looking at an airbag and glass. No other damage it seems. Hopefully I should have the car back by the end of the week.

A couple of other things. The chap I know at Sytner also said that air bag theft is fairly common in S11 and S10. This ties in with the recovery driver commenting on mine being his second of the day. When I called Sytner this morning I was asked if mine was the blue one or the black one!

Anyway, carry on...

Glad its getting sorted mate have they checked if any keys have been programmed? Was there any sign the OBD port had been touched?

Its enough i would have thought to draw the scums attention to it. To be honest, i would like blue flashing led door pins to finish it off lol

I have deleted my earlier post, ( mass hysteria) on reflection it was rather insensitive to forum members who have experienced theft and vandalism to their pride and joy.

Apologies Guys:

Having only bought my motor a couple of weeks ago I'm getting really concerned about this massive flaw in BMWs system. So I think an additional security system of some kind and relocation of the OBD is a must.

I'm reluctant to have yet another keyfob on my keyring though (I currently have 3 already - BMW / Wifes Megane Cabrio / House Alarm) and don't want another. Can these Viper systems be armed/disarmed with the regular BMW remote or do they HAVE to use their own?

You can choose to only use the BMW remote day to day, but most of the customers who say they don't want the viper remote on their keys always end up using it in the end. You could also leave it in your bedroom/lounge window. As soon as you get home, you'll be in range of the remote to use the pager functions.

I remember a friend had a special limited run Saxo VTS (only 10 made with rally spec - can't remember the name now) and his insurance insisted on a really high spec alarm, he got a toad 10 system which had shatter resistant glass film coating in the door windows - would that help deter this kind of theft?

Thought about security film myself but was told its pointless on pillarless

SercureMyCar - do you come up as far as Peterborough? Would definitely be interested if there was a group buy deal of some kind?

Yes we do cover Peterborough, I can do some sort of group but discount/free extras if we get 10 or more members. Email me on sales@securemycar.co.uk if your interested.

Tried it this morning. Locked the car with all the windows down. Was able to reach down to the port and fiddle about without setting the alarm off. Even jiggled at the steering wheel a bit too.

How much interior trim has to be dismantled to install one of these systems?

Cheers.

Hardly any panels are removed. Again, for security reasons I can't plaster over the net exactly what is done. But you won't notice any difference after the install.

I think it is not fair on OP to start group buy here.
Can Secure my car or somebody else start a new thread with all the information?

Secure my car, it would help others to put their name down if you can provide price tag for a group buy (10 customers)?

Thanks.

Actually I am quite upset but only because for a few brief days I basked in the glory of the sites most popular thread. And now that's over I re-join the ranks of the internets great unwashed.

OP really sorry to hear. Glad its getting sorted. A steering lock will prevent future occurrences plus put them off OBD theft of your car!

anyone own or previously own the e46? With the windows down and the car locked my previous e46 was so sensitive. You only needed to walk by the window...not even reach in and the alarm would trigger. Need to test this out with the misses e46 to see if it was just mine or is common for them. if so it looks like bmw downgraded the alarms on the e9s.

Hopefully I can post some vids of my findings if this is the case.

So, did you manage to find out if any new keys had been programmed?
