IMHO, that is actually about normal if the vast majority of your driving is city with lots of stop and go.

So at this point it seems there are only "rumors" of a new procedure for carbon-cleaning these diesel motors, but no actual SIB or anything concrete yet?
I have 8 more months of warranty left to decide if I want to keep the car (and I'd love to keep it).

They ended up paying two payments for me, so essentially handing me $1100 from my viewpoint. It was AWESOME. Maybe this is something you could do retroactively? Who knows. |

I'm down to like 18/19mpg all city recently and I just threw the zero adaptation code. Seems like it's got a miss at cold startup at idle. 58k on the clock. Here we go!

I feel that I have basically had to wait for engineering to develop a cleaning process for the intake. In the beginning it was to be all new parts. Then the head was sent out to a machine shop. And, now, after 5+ months no new parts. Only cleaned parts that will likely return to the same condition in another 40k miles. While I do not believe new parts are better, by cleaning the parts BMW saves quite a bit of money. So I feel that my waiting has improved their bottom line for the future. ![]() |

I got a call from my SA today. My D is ready. I'll be getting it on 4/1 and plan to talk with the Shop Foreman/Manager. A little history may help...I had gotten my D know that carbon issue was there and the dealer in Kentucky agreed to take care of it. The quote as to replace the intake and all the blah blah blah everyone was told. Gave a quote of like $1900 to take care of it and that dealer sent the Asheville one a check. The SA said that the total was a few thousand more and that BMW was taking care of it for me (win for me?) I don't know all the parts replaced but do know intake chemically cleaned, I think head was the same, lines were replaced and also gaskets and such. I will be asking to see if I can have a copy of the SIB on it...I will also see if I can have a copy of the bill on it even though it was on BMW's dime. I plan to ask if there was any information on preventative measures given to them...also will there be a chemical cleaning that does not require half the engine to be taken apart. I was hoping to see if anyone else has anything constructive that they would like me to try to ask. I'll be going early AM, by about 8:30AM eastern. Sorry my post is so late but have not had access to my computer as I just got back home from work. I'll print out any add'l questions prior to my leaving and get as many answered as I can...

Well, the service manager would not give me the service bulletin just noting that he could not do that but indicated that he was sure it would be located on line some where. While I had a full service clean up...lines, cylinder head, intake cleaned (those two where chemically cleaned), he stated that they were still waiting on the fitting for the walnut cleaning for the diesels. He stated that the labor time difference for what I had was at about 20 hours vs the walnut at up to 4.
His comments with regard to mods to help it indicated that people do put on catch can, use the Meth injection and so on. He looked around when I asked him about the EGR block...smiled and says that he knows people to this and it is effective as well. (NC is safety inspection only on diesels) His true want for the owners of the D's was that BG would develop the orafice to attach and use the cleaner on it. I believe he said the issue is more in the valve area and chemicals need to get far in there and added that the 328D has a CCV whereas our engine does not, they also changed issues with the EGR...He said that there were several discussions at the BMW gathering they had in Las Vegas a few weeks ago about the diesel. He stated that people in flat states were having more reported issues than in areas with mountains and more need to push the engine more...That's about all I can remember of the conversation. Not sure if the info I got helps any overall but the knowledge that they are having talks is acknowledgement that they know it's happening, still no real solution. I do have to say the D beats the pants off the 320i i've been driving for the last 2000 miles and all the other loaners. Glad to have it back. Now to budget for the mods ![]() |

![]() CCV (Crank Case Ventilation)? Of course the 335D has a CCV, this is where the catch can installs. |

...I think there is a CCV on the valve cover now where ours does not. I remember him saying the ultimate area for the issue starts at the top end of the valves -- valve cover and then impacts everything else. I could be a little off on that, it's been a long day. But that's the best I can do right now.
And yes, 500 or so is much better than 5000 or so... |

Just ran into a buddy of mine who has done work on my car for a couple of years now. He is a BMW master technician and now works solely on PUMA cases and methods of repairing BMW vehicles in general. He told me that from the start of this year he's been heavily involved with the carbon issues on the 335d. Told me that BMW dealers now have the tools for the walnut blasting type of cleaning. He also mentioned that the air intake manifold can also be sent away for cleaning and it'll come back looking brand new. Moreover, he said that every 335d owner should be prepared to do this at least once and perhaps more depending on how long you plan on owning your D.

The intake MUST be replaced or sent away for cleaning. Walnut blasting procedure alone will not solve our problems...and by itself does not cover us from a prevention perspective. It is part of the answer, but my SA said that the intakes are back-ordered very badly and that dealerships who have access to shops they trust to do the intake cleaning are sending them out. He said that the intake replacement/cleaning has been covered by warranty/CPO warranty in every case he has dealt with. He also said that the only cars he has seen personally have been SUVs. No sedans yet. Just some more data points from a guy who said he just returned from some sort of BMW conference where the subject came up. I walked away confident that BMW will take care of me when the need arises. ***I don't pretend that the above is definitive. Just adding to the knowledge base. ![]() |

I guess the question is when do we get them cleaned? After the car has thrown an SES light...and some other problem is occurring? What symptoms should have us asking to have the intake checked for carbon?
