Would be nice if our province's motorcycle insurance policies weren't so asinine. Not going to get political but that's the #1 reason why no one rides over here.

You end up paying more than the bike it worth per year in insurance alone.

I'd really love a bike but it just isn't worth it financially.
Damn that's unfortunate, sorry to hear about that. I wonder why that is

It's just a song and dance until you reach full licensing through the graduated system we have here. I'm not in my 20s anymore so it might not be THAT bad, but I'm also not in my 20s anymore...

I don't think I could pull off a Grom until fully licensed.

It's a blessing and a curse that we can hop on a liter bike at 16 here in the US. My first bike was a Ninja 600 at 17, which was summarily not a good idea.

It varies with the type of bike. My bike is worth 15x what I pay in insurance.

That said, we get financially RAPED for insurance up, of ALL types.

But, bottom line: riding is my link to sanity, and I would be in the wind, no matter the cost. It's THAT worth it to my mental health.

Cheers!

Thanks. I also rebuilt the top end of the engine this past summer. She's got just under 300,000 kms (over 185,000 miles) on her odo, and I'm getting her ready for the next 300K!

Cheers!

I hear ya--the sound of contacting the mirror probably made them alert. Better replacing this than trying to fix a whole door or quarter panel.

yay fun.
turns out when you remove the plastic from the #6 cylinder your idle problem goes away.

oh, and a new starter.

At least it looks like the bits were too big to get past the valve. Did you try to reassemble it to see how much, if any, might be missing?

oh the little metal pin is missing.
only the #6 exhaust valves know where thats gone.
it's not making bad noises, the plug I pulled out wasn't bashed and it's not got a dead hole.

it's been sitting for weeks, and in that time I had the idle issue was probably driven for less than 500 miles.

it sounds fine, it's running well, I'm not too worried.

if it needs an engine it needs an engine, no big deal. not too much to be done now.

Dude that sucks! Old valve? It takes a long time flapping around for a flap to split in half, did you see it had the metal pin previously?

I'm assuming it's OG 2006.
did they not have metal pins?

never got a code, never got anything.
just one day it had a miss at idle it never had before.

Are the pins magnetic or stainless steel? Would it be worth pulling the #6 spark plug out and fishing around with a magnet to see if it's in the cylinder?

These valves only seem to throw codes if there's a board issue or motor slowing down. Nothing else. Take a pic of the back of the valve, it should show build date right about in this area (excuse my sweaty ps reservoir ) what does the part number end on 929/537/114?

The pin is magnetic, I doubt if it actually ate a pin that his car would be running good, brand new late revision valves from BMW right now use the little pin, it's better I think because it's polished well enough that it wears out the top mounting hole of the flap less over time.

well 100% it's gone, it's not in the intake and it's not in the combustion chamber.
unless it's stuck in the top of the piston.

either way it doesn't really matter, because I'm not taking the head off this thing to fix it, I'll just replace it. hell, I'll upgrade to one that doesn't have perpetual lifter tick.

so we're just gonna send it, and not ask questions we don't want answers to.

Chances are it doesn't exist. If it's a very early valve it will have a hollow plastic shaft which the engine would have happily eaten

then that's even better.

the manifold was from an 06, so it's probably a really early joint. It has a single PCV port, so it's early early.

the tip was just broken off. I suspect that's when it folded. every other piece of the flap is there.

like I said, ran fine and then suddenly had a miss.

edit: It did have a hollow shaft, do the ones with metal pins have a solid rib instead? If so, this one didn't have a pin.

That's how the early valves fail, hollow shaft holding the entire top of the flap in the upper bearing surface, eventually it gets too worn and cracks off and the flap breaks away. Every disa after that is a solid shaft, same with the ones with the pin so for sure that one didn't have it. If it was a single port manifold those valves must be ancient. I'm sure your small disa also is a hollow shaft but shorter.

the small disa valve looked alright. wasn't sloppy at all, turned smartly when I told it to with inpa.

it's nice to know there's not any metal in there.

I guess we see how long the small one lasts, either it fails and makes me pull the intake again, or somehting else makes me pull it again and I do it because it's ancient.

And don't forget trucks, motorheads lurves diversity! I got my '06 F-350 back from the tranny shop today, rebuilt the 5R110W with a new billet converter. I DIYd most of this truck but I know when to bring in the pros, this was out of my league and took it to the guy who does the light commercial trucks in the area.
