Just washed my E91, if a car could faint in shock it would have :-) Looks great clean. Down side of a car port over a proper garage is that stuff still ends up on the car.

Finally replaced my evaporator.

Oh, and on Tuesday, replaced my clutch and rebuilt the shifter. Turns out the release bearing was the issue, clutch had lots of life left at 200k.

Nice work--two very intensive jobs.

By "release bearing," do you mean throwout bearing? What issues was it giving you?

Yes, the throw out bearing. When the vehicle was cold, I could not get it into first gear when stopped. Looks like release bearing was not fully disengaging the clutch, causing the clutch to drag slightly preventing gear engagement. I could see the flywheel was a little overheated just along the outer edge compared to the rest of the clutch surface.

So issue was either a bad first gear synchro in the tranny or the clutch. But a bad synchro is usually worse when tranny gets hot, not cold. So i decided to replace the clutch and see what's what. Issue is 100% fixed now. Thank god.

Did the front brakes, it’s a dirty and not so glamorous job. Those damn rattle clips were the death of me, especially the passenger side which would not hold. I went with the Zimmerman rotors and Akebono kit from FCP.

When I replace the DISA I'll switch to a catch can setup and install the new starter

Edit: Might have another VCG leak it was replaced two years ago. I do love this car. I feel like a father. I'm not mad, just dissapointed. I expect nothing more
You have codes for the board being open and the motor not activating. Shit. The misfires shouldn't be related to that at all though. People drive without working valves for years no issue
Damn. Must have been the cause of the original code I had that made me want to rebuild them in the first place.

Thinking the misfires might be fouled plugs. I'm going to do some more investigating, theres what looks like oil all over the hose clamp that connects the inlet tube to the throttle body

Hmm...not sure I fully agree with this assessment because Hondas and Toyotas generally sell for high prices unless you hop on a deal with someone saying 'take this today for $100 above trade in, or I'll trade it in' (which is probably equally likely on a BMW). German cars have a lot more small issues that are easy fixes that make for low selling prices, minimal investment after purchase, and high value increase once fixed

I love BMW clutches. That clutch disk looks like it has a ton of life left, easily could’ve gone past 300k if the bearing didn't fail

The issue is you can easily loose your investment on a broken BMW if you don't know exactly what you are doing. Not so much a N/A 3-series but something like a newer 7-series or 5-series it can be quite costly to fix even just for parts, and the values drop so quickly it's hard to get back what you put in. Yeah, you can buy an E46 for $1200 and fix it up and sell it for $2500, but it will be harder to find a buyer which is my main point.

You can buy a $2000 Civic, fix it up and sell it to someone who blindly wants a "reliable Honda" for their daughter for $4300 without much work.

I'm usually not a fan of white gauges in modern cars but for some reason this one looks really good. Well done.

In other news I'm currently making a smoke machine with materials I have laying around the house. The hardest part is waiting for the epoxy to dry

I wonder if this is the cause of my intermittent odd clutch behavior. It's tough to get into gear sometimes when stopped, reverse or first. When I do get it into gear, I sometimes hear a thud from the rear end despite the clutch pedal being fully depressed.

I'm going to try bleeding it first, but I am considering a clutch and flywheel (dual mass) replacement within the next year. I'm getting some noise that seems like it's the flywheel. Occasional rattle/chirp on startup and a noticeable clunk when reversing out my downhill sloped driveway when I depress the clutch pedal while moving, in addition to the thud and occasional tricky gear engagement described above.

Very true about the buyers of old high mileage BMWs, which is precisely how I got my 325i for my kid. The $2000 civics are non-existent near me. I looked everywhere for a while and anything priced well was trash that needed far too much work. Found a high mileage 325i for $2000 and jumped on it. Sure it needed some work but not nearly as much as the clapped out Civics/Accords/Camrys and the body was excellent aside from some scrapes on the bumpers.

I did see an incredible Subaru Outback with manual transmission listed for $1200. Original owner. 160K miles. Needed a new radiator and water pump according to the owner who just bought a new Outback and wanted to get rid of it, though I strongly expected it to need new head gaskets. Still, I would have jumped on it for that price and done the work but it sold within an hour of posting it.

Did the m3 front lower control arms yesterday and whiteline poly bushings in the tension struts today. Just got it aligned and car feels sooo much better. Stuff i replaced seemed to have never been changed except for 1 of the lower control arms.

Also just hit 190k miles last night

Thanks for the info. I'm having the typical throwout bearing helicopter noise when the car is warm and would like to keep an eye out for when it gets worse. So far at 125k miles, it still seems to shift fine, except sometime the shifter lever gets stuck trying to go into 1st.

That is an epic idea, wish I'd thought of that before I swapped my silver out for the wood effect trim.

My Chinesium radiator that did not line up on one side and was being held on that side with a zip tie for the past few months finally had the tie let go lol. I should probably figure out a way to actually screw this in place
