I did something I thought I'd never do.

Removed both drivers and passenger seat to vacuum the carpet... the carpets literally brand new under the seats. No food crumbs, dirt, or stains anywhere.

The first owner/PO took really good care of this thing. It was his baby before I took it

You can drain it completely by removing one of the banjo bolts from the rack but you could also just probably siphon out the bottle with a turkey baster and put new fluid in after cycling the rack, its going to suck the new fluid back down and push old fluid back up. Youre going to be somewhat diluting the crap but its basically operating like a coolant flush, you do it often so you dilute the crap to the point it doesnt matter.

Simple stuff, made a drain for the parts washer and cleaned up a bit an mtech 1 bumper I had bought at the junkyard and realized shortly after it wouldn't work for an E46 coupe lol.

Has anyone here done an electric fan conversion on an e46?
(I know this is E90post but some people here have that generation too)
My concerns with that conversion are the lack of a fan shroud that the oem mechanical fan has and that it goes from a mechanical clutch fan and auxiliary fan to just a single fan from the manual car and Im not sure if it can keep the transmission cool long term down here. Wondering because I can just get one cheap at the yard and not have to deal with the mechanical fan in the way all the time which also needs a clutch so it doesn't sound like a UPS truck

I put an MTech2 bumper on my old E46 Convertible and loved it. I understand that you can delete the puller fan also if you go with an electric fan on the E46, you should look at E46Fanatics for a tutorial. The elimination of the fan clutch will also take stress off the water pump shaft. Here's a picture of my old E46 with Style 197's.

My 2001 325Ci had a viscous coupling, 2002 325i touring had the electric fan instead. Only time I ever had trouble with a mechanical water pump was my E36 328i, viscous coupling went in the middle of nowhere. By the time I'd gotten to somewhere with tools it had killed the water pump bearings.

Well the reason I'm on the fence about it is concerns with the electric fan being designed to work with a manual e46, being retrofitted to work with an automatic transmission one which has obviously one more thing for the fan to work cool down. But it seems nobody has had issues running it so I'll be on the hunt for a used one at the yard, or I'll weigh if it's better to just buy a fan clutch for this. Too bad the mtech 1 bumper won't work for the coupe so will have to sell rip.

Bought an oil cooler heat exchanger from an x3 at the junkyard today along with the hose to guide myself. Seems a lot easier than I thought to retrofit, just need the different coolant hose and can reuse the n54 filter housing I have sitting around.

Added coolant again. Leaked more than I thought it did, had to add a quarter of a gallon. Been slacking on refilling it since I'm draining it for the rad, hose, and overflow tank r&r tomorrow. I forgot to order a new cap for the tank Just going to need to clean up the old one real good with a toothbrush.

My only explanation is it's replacement Behr rad (infamous inlet elbow crack on the oem last year). I thought it was the return line from the expansion tank so I replaced that, which it was leaking from the hose clamp. The clamp had cut through the hose. Now its just dripping from what appears to be the end tank. I believe you suggested awhile back recrimping the metal with pliers? That's how long I've put off dealing with it lol. Leak used to be intermittent, now its daily. Hence the refresh.

Probably was someone else that suggested that but I think it could work if it's indeed that. I'd hope it has some kind of manufacturer warranty and would get it changed. Might fully crap out one day

Bought it off FCP so it has the lifetime warranty
Didn't want to deal with it ever again so I opted for a csf

I used to look for leaks visually but after problems on my old RAV4 I got a cheap pressure testing kit from ebay. Right away I found the leak on a cracked radiator fitting. I'm a bit paranoid about coolant leaks as I have three cats. Cats love the smell of coolant for some reason but it's fatal even in small doses.

It isn't one of Jake's polishing jobs but I think it looks good enough for just a wire brush, scotchbrite and soap. Also glad I cleaned it thoroughly inside as it had some oil filter pieces in there

I considered that once before. It'd be expensive to do either way so oh well

highly recommend a basic pressure test on a used heat exchanger so you're sure it doesn't have internal leaks.
