Our 4.5 month old Standard Poodle (Shiloh) is now 38.5 pounds and my daughter says that even though he is still a puppy, she is having a hard time holding and cuddling him

We got her from a shelter in San Diego. She is now 11, happy, healthy and as playful and mischievous as on day one.

So Excited.... After being on a 6 Month wait list... Our new puppy has been born! And now we have 8 weeks to go. 8 months for a custom breed hybrid pet. With the desired breed, color and size. Definitely a small investment of $3,000. But knowing and seeing the breeders and dogs environment, living conditions and 2 year health and life Gurantees, gives us peace of mind.

Hey, we are thinking of getting a white shepherd for our next dog (still hopefully 3-5 years away before our current dog passes) - do you notice any difference in temperment between your two shepherds?

Might sound crazy, but in my very limited observations, black coloured dogs always seem to be a little more aggressive for whatever reason. I'm not sure its a thing, or that it could ever be linked to colour of the dog, but I'm curious.

I had an all black female for 6 years before bringing home the all white female - the two got along great - but was easy to tell the black was the alpha.

Since the black passed away and we got the black and tan male - both get along, but the white has taken over the alpha rule.

The white is more friendly with people, but she's taking therapy classes (not that we'll use her for that - she just enjoys going to school...and the black and tan is in advanced CGC). White has a tendency to bark more at others outside...where the black/tan is more calm when it comes to that.

Only real difference between the colors is the shedding. While all shepherds shed...the white one brings more meaning to the word. There's white hair everywhere (and I mean, everywhere).

All shepherds are smart out of the box...but if you keep up with training, you'll see what level they can really get to. Nothing beats a very well behaved puppy.

Thanks for that. I had two shepherds growing up, both super smart, so I believe it. Our lab sheds a fair bit right now, but I expect a Shepherd to shed even more than that.

It does bolster my view that off colour dogs, especially black, seem to have a more dominating / aggressive tack. Not always in a mean way, just want to be Alpha.

I also have spent time around cats (females) from my relatives and friends homes.

So we have decided to get our first family dog since marriage and my 2 children.Yasuda over 2 decades! My wife, children and I specifically wanteda smaller breed that would mostlybe Indoors. Here's my question...
Between Male and Female, specifically for those of you with small breeds, what have you noticed as far as: demeanor, training, communication, territorial, and overall character differences?

We have had a male and a female together twice, in both cases King Charles Cavaliers. In the first case, the female was about 6 mos. older and in the second, the male is a little over 2 years older. It may vary by breed, but we have found out 2 males to be more affectionate and loyal and the females to be more bossy, for lack of a better term. Each of the four have some similar personality traits, yet all four have distinct personalities of their own. Our current male has some anxiety issues around other dogs he doesn’t know and acts like he is a tough guy despite weighing in at 20 lbs. (we are working with him but not easy to resolve). I don’t think you can go wrong with either male or female. The differences are fairly subtle.

She is the only furniture chewer we’ve had. Glad I didn’t replace the family room coffee table when my wife wanted to do so. And she’s been spayed so we’ll just say devil.

Do you like your grass? Female dogs are better at killing the grass from their urine than males. So might be a consideration point. From what I understand there isn't a difference in dog's urine from male vs female in that both urine has a higher content of a chemical that kills grass, but the reason female dogs are often the cause of burn spots over males is that they squat to pee and so it is more concentrated an area. Versus a male that lifts and sprays all over or goes in several spots to mark territory and therefore doesn't pee in one area enough to burn the grass.

Something to consider. Might want the male.

And some small dogs are real ankle biters and just annoying. I'm looking specifically at chihuahau's or whatever they are. I've not yet met one that didn't think they were 20 times their size and who didn't want to bite my feet. So I don't like them too much.

Small males that are neutered also squat sometimes. We haven’t had any grass burning issues with either male or female, but small dogs also pee less than big dogs so that may be a factor.

True, I have always had Labs and Shepherds, so the volume output on a smaller dog might not be a concern. My neutered lab also sometimes squats, so I've definitely got some burn spots, but he lifts enough times to not be terribly damaging.
