I have used plexiglass boards, tile boards and still havent got enough reflexions to my tastes. Then I tried a mirror and it was too intense.

Mind sharing what you are using?

the glasses are placed on my desk which is made of a thick black glass. i placed the flash under that and bounce it off the white wall. no other light and i was in a dark room.

i should have placed something smoother behind the glass because there is a small amount of texture on the wall.

Ah; I see. I have ordered a very glossy 16x16 black tile; but I just remembered it was quite a couple weeks ago; I should call back and see if they got it.

I achieved nice results with the black plexiglass reflexion boards; but nothing come close to what I have in mind.

Great shots, Ed and panicos.

I saw an article recently (in a magazine, I think) about a guy doing extraordinary stuff with scientific glassware filled with colored water. He had a very complex lighting setup with lights under the semi-opaque black glass table and more lights behind several screens behind the table. He used a tethered camera to shoot it all. The images were awesome, but what a lot of work to set it up.

Dunno. Always possible.

Had to try out the 400 5.6 on a moon shot tonight. Full moons aren't the best for detail, but it still came out ok.

7D with 400mm, f5.6, 1/800, ISO400

Mark,
You should have tried that also at F8 and check out the difference in sharpness at both apertures.

I started at f11 and worked my way down (or up). I found the faster shutter speed images came out better. Although the difference was slim. The light haze didn't help matter. I could have waited until the moon was higher and above the haze, but it was already late.

Denn, if you want to take out that geometric distortion, Digital Lens Optimization in Digital Photo Professional will straighten it automatically. I understand that Lightroom also has add-ins that will do this.

It this image, it's an attention grabber that you may have meant to leave in.

Mark,
try leaving it at 1/800th and let the ISO float since the noise on those are so controlled.
Cable release or self timer I imagine too?

Dave,
although a excellent pose and a nearly clean shot (one twig on the back). I would think about cropping less and going over the sharpening again would eliminate the artifacts showing. There is noise on the back and halos around the legs. Not your typical PP that I have seen coming from you.

That shot was handheld. If I get out to try again this weekend when it's supposed to be warmer, I'll set up the tripod and use a cable. Then I won't be so worried about shutter speed. And that was with the 7D, so noise is still a concern.

live view and 10X maginification works great on moon shots too. Also put the camera on multiple shot, and just hold the trigger for a few shots. Reason for this is atmospheric distortion changes so much even though your focus is the same, some shots will still be clearer then others.

In that case, that is a superior shot. I tried hand held a couple of times and said "why bother".
Do you have a CF tripod yet? They kill vibrations and I think wood does even a better job than that.

Other than that, AC45s from Sept on the bay. I just need to go out there and get the AC70 now.

That's good advice. Also, if you've been shooting in AI Servo mode, be sure to go back to Single Shot. In fact, consider setting focus with the LV 10x and then switching to Manual Focus with the lens switch.

Many days the moon looks good to the eye, but you can't get a good, sharp shot because of the atomosphere.

What about mirror slap? I always wait for the heat/wind/vibration (NVH lol)to settle before taking just one shot. If you take a shot with live view and no preview image I will see the image try to settle down after one shot. This is with the CF tripod about 30" off the ground (Manfr. 055 CX and 468) and cable release.
Or just come to the West coast where we have those 10,000+ foot peaks where the viewing is great but we don't have those fantastic sunsets from back East.
