I have no idea why RB is keeping Perez around. I would have dumped him at the end of last season once it was clear Max had completely broken him.

Seems RB doesn't have the edge this year. Max is showing his prowess and pushing the car to the top but it's becoming increasingly difficult it seems. Good in my opinion so we can see some actual battles. Merc on top was a total surprise.

Horner knows why.

There are many possible reasons. He's there to back up Max to get the points (not going too well at the moment). He's not there to challenge Max (the broken part). He's there to pay Max's salary. He's there to show Marko who's in charge. There are many reasons that are not fully known, maybe Horner gets something under the table (not that he needs it). Someone suggested marketing. Etc

Yeah read on one of the photographers feeds people were being turned away at practice when everything went ahead. Some said they were going to the casino and they were let by and got into the circuit, very odd state of affairs when F1 hadn’t cancelled anything.

If it is a 1+1 deal maybe they can indeed pull the plug early as it’s embarrassing when he puts performance in like this, I think Stroll would do better and that’s saying something.

I think RB drinks sales are also a factor. Mexico is a large country (130 million), so a lot of potential customers. RB and Monster Energy are from what I could find very much competing in Mexico.
And I think Checo now has accepted that his role in the RB team is not to compete for the WDC, but to aid and assist Max where ever he can. So that there are no Rosberg moments.

But it's not good for the sport. There are very talented young drivers like Lawson sitting on the bench because old drivers past their peak keep driverseats occupied.
Ricciardo, Perez and Bottas keep new talent away.
