Been running an EBAY GT35 non ball bearing turbo for last couple weeks, ebay turbo has been holding up so far. No dyno. Kinda late right now so will add more in the morning.

I should probably run a screen of some sorts to protect it somewhat, can't really fit a filter.
Dude, what gives? You only come here to post about your troubles. How about some goodness? Some videos of the set up and car running? We want to keep our pipe dream going.

Welcome back and sorry to hear about the drive belt.

Ya man, you gotta protect that turbo. Glad to see you posting again, I've been wondering how you were getting on with your project.

So are the N52 motors good for a higher HP output then? Or its still a hazy topic?

People keep saying that the N54 is good for 800 WHP stock. If the N52 could be good for 400 HP that be pretty nice. Although the only concern is the price. If the turbo set up cost as much as a supercharger I think i would go for the turbo set up. Because Choo choo noises!

This thread is proof that it can be done. Plus BPC is working on something as well. Take a look at some of the more recent topics.

Thanks man.

I did get my upgraded turbo back and installed. I upgraded the GT35R turbo to a GTX35R with a ported front shroud.I also went to a larger turbine housing from a .83 to a 1.06. Work was done by Turbo Lab in Virginia. Not sure how I feel about this setup yet.. well only had it on the car for 1 day so...

This was the Ebay GT35 temporary turbo I had on the car for a couple weeks. Actually worked pretty well for a $180 turbo I was surprised. I borrowed it off of another 4cyl project I'm working on.

Billet wheel GTX35 cartridge

GTX35R Installed

Close up of front wheel and antisurge housing.

Comparison of turbine housings .83 vs 1.06

I have an album on my facebook page with some pics of this project if you guys wanna see

Yes can feel the power difference on highway runs now, but lost that crazy bottom end transient response, which I may be able to tune back in a little. Again it's only been a day since I installed it so still haven't decided on if I'm gonna switch back to the .83 or keep the 1.06. I go on highway drives with a group who has M cars, Porsches, ferraris and corvettes, so some more torque on the highway is a welcome change in that instance...

Damn compromises To bad the variable turbines are $$$ and require more hardware/software. I really like what Christian Koenigsegg came up with on his One:1

You know what they say... If you gotta ask...

On a side note, he could probably sell just the turbines in various T3, T4 etc and fund more of his crazy endeavors.

They need to make this in supercharger pulleys!

We all need to fund this man and get a guide to boosting the N51/N52's down. Who knows, this could very well be the better option over the N54 for the money!

Unless you are a fabricator, not likely. Lots of custom work went into this build, and if you were to outsource all of that, it would cost a lot more than you think. That said, there is still a great deal to learn from his build, so it is very helpful to the community.

I dont know why. I really like my 5 series. As much as I want something faster, I keep looking back at my car going... Its ok for now. Although at the same time everytime on the highway I want a little umph. A turbo set up for under 5k would be great.

I kept hearing everything from the block cant handle the boost to the supercharger blowing up the N52 at 350 hp. I keep hearing different things. Thats why I came here to get some things cleared up. I really want to boost the N52, just waiting on something worth the money. I plan on getting a M4 in 3 years so I figured maybe a supercharger would be a good investment for my E60? At least I would be able to run with some 535s. Plus you still get the satisfaction of the N52.

Is is true you cant get more than 100 hp out of the ESS supercharger?

I havent had any problems with it... kinda just waiting till the water pump goes. I probably should overhaul the cooling system before winter hits.

The engine bay could use a nice turbine in there.... lol

I am not speaking of creating a kit, just a guide to understanding the N51/52 and seeing how it handles the changes made. I know how to do a lot of this stuff already, but I want to know as much as I can before start hacking up my I6 . I may be next on the guinea pig list...

Im so tempted to say screw it and get a supercharger, i am not sure. Im a little meh about it since it seems like 300 is the max you can get out of it. AT least I havent seen anyone getting more. The turbo is nice. Looks insane from the video.

Granted I got a slushbox so idk how that would work. Tho more and more E60s seem to get wrecked and people are parting them out etc. So Im also entertaining a N54 swap. Some guy was selling a trans and a transfer case along with a few extra bits for 500 bucks... just so he can get rid of it.

But then again a e31 would be nice too. I could just turbo that instead lol

Bumpity bump this post!!

I have been thinking the same, did some research on it, the ESS tuning SC kit for N52 was said to increase stock hp from 80 to 100hp at 6psi boost level, I did some research and thinking to add below supporting mods to increase it to 10 to 12 psi that should make 100whp easily achievable (to reduce chances of detonation on higher boost):

1. full e85 fuel;
2. water/meth kit;
3. adding intercooler;

main question I have is, what is max boost the n52 can take as research doesn't seem to show any result since no one seems to have done it before except OP...
