Jim,
You have been tuning for a long time and I'm sure you expect to receive a fair bit of criticism from folks anytime you introduce something like this. The information coming out of these discussions is beyond excellent. I expect (more like desperately hope) that you will stick around these boards. This is the most excited I've been about my car since I bought it. |

I don't recall reading any "official" statements from Jim regarding whp/wtq for the "base" N54 tune that would be included with the SharkEdit or Shark Injector, although people have speculated the increase to be similar with other offerings running much higher boost (e.g., Dinan at 13-13.6 psi all the way to Procede at 15psi) whereas Jim's tune is running only 12psi. Can you provide us any more details at this point, Jim? Is it possible that you are extracting more power at lower boost due to having control over items that the piggies don't/can't (e.g., vanos and max VE)?

Steve has his customers - I have had mine since 1993. They are very much different customers. What I do think this is going to do - is open up the BMW tuning market just as the GM, Ford, etc tuning markets are open. And not just the BMW market - the EURO market in General. (Did you know for $299 - the "base" edit package for OBD-I will also do Porsche, Volvo, and Ferrari - among others - with Motronic thru 1995?) Yeah. Initially, will there be some charlatans saying they are "tuners"? Oh sure. We already have those though, don't we. Those and the "minions" - who are the reason that most tuners (including myself) simply don't come to any internet BMW board anymore. I only came on here because someone at BF told me I should look at E90post. To be honest - I already remember why I stopped posting on the internet. Too many armchair "experts" who "know" this or that. To answer a few questions.. 1) Why don't I just release a Shark Injector.... I am - but I felt that for the whole industry this was a more important development than the Shark Injector. I also had the new USB-enabled Shark Injector on the table and most people didn't even notice it (some who 'get it' have already pm'ed me - and they GET IT - if you know what I mean - there is a reason I nicknamed this "The Sharkhattan Project" 2) Do I think people will blow up their cars - they are doing it right now - and they aren't using software - so sure. You can also use MSWord to send bad threats to people you shouldn't. That's not Bill Gates' worry either. To quote Dirty Harry: "A man has got to know his limitations" 3) Copyright Protection.... eleven words for that: (ready?) Digital Millenium Copyright Act Federal 'Pound-me-in-the-ass' Prison (for us Office Space fans ) Is that 11? Or 7 w/ one compound/hyphenated? 4) What maps can be 'edited' ? Every map in the DME - we will provide all the maps that we know are needed to tune each type of DME we release - we also provide a tuning strategy document - a little prettier than the usual scratchy notes I use on the dyno hopefully - so you know WHAT each map DOES. (Example: it might not be intuitive to most how boost control on the 335i actually works - or if coming from some other car manufs - that the maps don't need to be "smooth" like some Mitsus do!) BUT the whole point of this tool is that while you get some maps that have been pre-defined for your ecu, YOU can define your own maps. And your friend can define some maps. And you can share ideas 5) What we need is a "vag-com" for the 335i. No, what we need is complete diagnostics for all BMW's from 96 thru current. (We can neither confirm - nor deny) 6) Will this work for............ The editor is open architecture - the API will be released to interested and qualified developers. If they want to make flashing/etc plugins for the Pagani Zonda - GO FOR IT. Lastly... For those who want the Shark Injector - relax - it's coming but we decided to update the hardware to handle the CAN bus for 2008+ cars. It needed to happen - and since we were expanding the onboard memory anyway.... Have a great rest of the weekend - I have a flight to catch. Jim PS: If you are so worried about mystery "flash counters" then buy a spare DME. Or don't tune your car at all and relax. Enjoy 300hp and 300 lb-ft. |

Jim, I'm not interested in a "Vag-com" like logging program, unless we're talking about the RAM logging aspect with 30+ variables at 30+ hz...but it would be cool to see a logging program that is integrated into the tuning suite, a'la AEM, ECUtek, etc. It would be absolutely amazing if we had live and replay (log) cell tracking as well Again, thanks for all that you have shared with us so far. I am very excited to dig into my ECU when the time is right.

Where did this info come from? 80hp @12 psi? Jim, can you give us a bit more info on what your base maps/power gains will look like with the shark edit and injector?

Jim (or anyone else more awake than me):
I've read through this thread and I'm still having a bit of trouble comprehending the products (probably because I haven't had coffee yet). Go easy on me: The injector and edit are basically two different products, correct? Or are they the same product with different software? Is one able to upgrade to the edit if one purchases the injector and later decides he/she wants the ability to change maps? The injector price is $299, including Jim's pre-loaded map? Or is that the price for the edit, and no announced price for the injector yet?

MSDv81 is suppose to be a higher level of DME blocking for tunes, but for MSDv80 it seems everyone is saying that they are added v29.2. does MSDv81 come with the same v29.2 software? that is ultimate protection. |

For some reason, I'm thinking there is some wiggle room going on with those numbers. I'd wait for Mr. Comforti to step up, and say exactly WHAT we'd need, given our tuning situation.
So, what IS our final price (before shipping and the like, obviously), assuming we want the whole shebang (Software, cables, whatever else we'd need)? -Adam |

Ok so let me see if I have this.
Shark Injector - Release date to be announced. Simple plug in and flash Shark Edit - Available July. Uses laptop to create your own maps or load maps from other developers (Any who want to get involved and sign the agreements with Jim. With that being said I wouldn't be surprised to see our normal players involved here). Shark Edit is also available with a default 12ish PSI map. Did I get it right, or am I way off? |
