I still give him props for going in with his mods on.

Better than the 90% of the people here that will bring thier car in, get their warranty denied after the techs determine a piggy back was used, then lie to them and say "I have NEVER had a piggy back on this car sir! How dare you accuse!"

Just accept the simple fact:

Piggy Back = Warranty Voided

That is how BMW wants it, and that is how it will be.

When you go to a dealership - all of the tools are connected to a network
back to BMW AG.

This is how BMW knows what "I-Level" (think: programming version) your
car currently has. They have the records from production and they also
have the records of update from the dealerships.

BTW, what is a "DSC" besides Dynamic Stability Control?

there is the SSS, which is the Software Service Station

There is the DIS, the GT1.

All of which connect to the car via a little thing called a "diagnostic head"

Of which there are 3 versions.

OPPS, OPS, and the basic diagnostic head.

The SSS is what updates your car as is needed.

The "as is needed" is determined by the discs currently loaded.
That's gay if you know all that stuff unless you're a BMW tech, tuner etc.I usually don't go past the showroom floor.

Buddy, take it somewhere else - you're wasting your breath. Go back to the nice safe stock E9x forums...

And by the way, piggyback doesn't necessarily mean warranty voided by any means, so stop being so gloom-n-doom....every situation is unique.

Blah Blah Blah I feel for ppl who had bad breaks but it's like saying "If you speed you will get a ticket". Yes if you are not smart about it you get the ticket. If you screw up and punch it at the wrong time you get a ticket. If you coast at 7 over you will likely not get a ticket unless you catch a bad break. Tuning is a series of calculated risks. I trust Shiv and his product so I have faith that the risk is minimal. When I go to the dealership I do what I can to lower the risk and then hope for the best. Saying that everyone with a tune will lose warranty is taking a small group of situations and blowing them out of proportion. Flame on fanboi.

What would prevent BMW from implementing the detunes through automatic software upgrades and thereby save a ton on dough on warranty repairs? How could an owner prove the car was detuned? Even if it could be proven, does an owner have any legal "right" to preserve the original performance specifications?
+1

This is a unique insight into another way that stealth updates can harm our car's performance without our knowledge.
