Note; the arbitrary 1200 mile mark isn’t a point at which you can then suddenly floor the car.

Why? As long as the engine is up to temp you’re good to go after 1,200 miles!

From the manual -
“From 2000 km, 1200 miles onwards
Rotational speed and vehicle speed can be gradually increased.”

Agreed..it's not like the motor suddenly becomes 100% broken in at 1,200. I gradually began giving it more throttle to ease into the 'broken in' phase. Over a little more time you can eventually lay into it. Of course it's your car and you can do what you want.

this comment makes no sense. If it's in the manual why is that mark considered arbitrary? further, if it is arbitrary, then it shouldn't matter what you do/don't do after 1,200 miles.

that's what happens when you accelerate in a car, the engine and vehicle speed gradually increase 😉

The manual also says oil changes every 10K miles is ok.

the manual is just that - an owners manual providing general guidance. it's reasonable to think that different drivers who drive their cars differently will need to care and maintain their cars at different intervals. I have a personal relationship with the service director at my local dealership who happens to service many of the cars from Thermal, in addition my parents neighbor is an engineer for BMW out of Camarillo, both said the same thing - don't let the car overheat and as long as I don't track the car bring in 1x a year/10miles (3rd car not daily driver for us) for oil changes and other recommended services. sure you can do above and beyond that, and maybe I will change my own oil more frequently... but either way I think it's comical to cherry pick recommendations in the manual.

You are doing just that though, you are arguing that 1200mi break in is not arbitrary and simultaneously arguing that the manual is only general guidance. You can't have it both ways.

All others here were saying is that getting to 1200mi doesn't exactly mean you should floor it right away, since it isn't a hard and fast number.

Perhaps this confusion is over the meaning of the word "arbitrary"? Your most recent comment here implies that you are in agreement, so not sure where the argument is.

It’s arbitrary because there is no difference between say, 1150 miles and 1250 miles of motoring. However, there is a difference between 50 miles and 1200 miles. The 1200 miles point isn’t a digital switch point but a line needs to be drawn somewhere.

Nope, the engine rotational speed is not “gradual” if you floor it.
Prior to 1200, the run in rotational speeds should have been varied to half of what the engine will do. The 1200 mile point is when they suggest you can start ramping up the revs for example by 1000 rpm per 200 miles i.e. gradually.

Ah, sorry mate. Just noticed you only have a 230i. You’re right, engine rotational speeds will be gradual there. Knock yourself out. Floor it.

Out of curiosity, how frequently do you change the oil?

I'm doing them every 5K. This worked well with my BRZ that is now at 192K and running great, purchased at 8 miles in 2013.

I'll chime in on the 10k oil change. That's exactly what I did on my M235i. I got 4 on BMW's dime when the maintenance plan was 4yrs/50k and I paid for 3 and traded the car at 72k miles. NO issues and shockingly enough, not even a weeping oil filter housing gasket. Would there be an issue at 150k? Who knows......

Probably fine at 10K, but doing them at 5K can only help things (excluding your wallet).

I still haven't decided if I'm going to use the dealers free few oil changes. I may just DIY with LiquiMoly

I’m torn on that console cubby. It’s definitely a great idea to utilize the space and appears to fit well. I don’t know what I’d put in it other than my keys. I worry that if I made a habit of putting keys there, I’d be more likely to eventually scratch surrounding plastic or console trim. I’m going to put a pin in that one for now and see if I find myself wanting.

I am with you on that. Looks like a cool idea, but scratches are a concern and even more so for me, if I don't end up using it, it'll just keep filling up with dust over time (I drive with my windows down/sunroof open more often than not).
