Probably explains your rasping.

I'm running Supersprint headers, stock mids, and a Supersprint street muffler. The headers and muffler are tuned to each other to eliminate such things.

While I initially didn't like the E46 M3's note, it is definitely a unique one. It's grown on me. I wouldn't say I'm so alone either. Most of the enthusiasts I've met seem to agree

I think the s54 sounds 10x better than anything BMW has put out recently; sub the s65 and s85.

The new m3/m4 sounds terrible IMO. Either the stock exhaust or aftermarket i haven't found any of them to sounds particularly fantastic.

Z4M coupe definitely sounds different than the E46 M3, likely because it has secondary cats from the factory.

Induction noise is where the S54 comes into its own.

The noise is getting really loud from my DISA valves. It makes my N51 sound like an engine in a diesel truck.

Right because its your DISA valves making the noise, not the HVA's.........

If you're referring to the lifters, then yes, they tick. But the DISA valves make another noise altogether for your information.

I know e60 LCI 530xi owner (N52B30), who has faulty DISA problem. Fortunately he has diagnosted and replaced broken DISA before flap flew away into engine.
Broken DISA started to make rattling sound and engine lost some power, so he checked DISA and its flap was loosen.
