Disposable cameras are really important to work with. Before needing to fiddle with this and that, using a disposable is helpful in learning how to develop an eye, working with the space around you with a fixed focal length and a charge-up flash. Then start working with your auto mode, and eventually, start recognizing the different light metering characteristics of different photographic environments. Then you'll be set for your manual modes. Once you're confident, do buy a separate lens from the kit lens. Fixed lenses are going to give you the most reliable shot if you've picked the right one, and you'll be accustomed to using a fixed focal length from your disposable camera days. Photography is really fun if you treat it like less of a book-learned skill and more an experience learned skill. Don't let a couple of not-so-great photos discourage you; the best part of digital is being able to delete and reshoot. Just have fun.
