Going to work this morning on 495. A guy in a chevy truck I passed pulls up besides me. I look over and he's pointing to the front of my car. I'm thinking wth is there something wrong with the car. No sensors are saying anything I don't feel the car driving differently. So I pull over to see what's wrong. I don't see anything and go to work. Check the car again in the parking lot..nothing. Now I can't help but think what's wrong with the car. The guy was a in his 50s probably wearing a shirt and tie so I don't think he was f'ing me..or was he.

Slight trimming up top to fit flush. Pretty easy, but installing the couplers were a pain. Just get yourself some ratcheting wrenches and/or joint extensions to reach in there. Hit up Tiago@VRSF

I posted this in the general forum and the consensus was that I'm getting ripped off on labor
The shop I use charges $90 an hour for labor. Should I be looking for a different mechanic in the area? Here's the breakdown of my car since the CPO warranty expired. March 2012 - $500? (Indy) ~52,000 miles Rear brakes, rotors, oil change March 2013 - $820 (Dealer) ~62,500 miles Front brakes, rotors, brake fluid flush, oil change April 2013 - $1,678 ~62,500 miles New tires/wheels April 2013 - $300 (Indy) ~62,500 miles Alignment, oil change (some other stuff I don't remember) October 2013 - $1,800 (Dealer, had to get it towed and dealer was closest) ~65,000 miles Water Pump, thermostat, belt tensioner May 2014 - ?? (Indy) Oil change September 2014 - $135 (Indy) ~65,000 miles Recalibrate steering angle sensor May 2015 - $217 (Indy) 73,000 miles Oil Change & check car for items in June 2015 June 2015 - $1,340 (Indy) 73,000 miles Brake fluid flush, replace VANOS solenoids, front tension struts, and front lower control arms Total: $6,791 Granted, the wheels were about $900 but still. My tires now need replacing after two years and 12,000 miles and one of the wheels is bent so add another $8-900 to that cost. I am also still having rough idle issues, which the new solenoids were supposed to help with, so who knows what else is wrong. Time for an upgrade or keep going? I really should have just traded it in before spending $1300 this month. edit: fixed the dates Last edited by MetsFan; 06-10-2015 at 08:46 AM.. |

$90 an hour isn't bad, it also isn't great. $75 an hour is what you want but to find someone who is a BMW specialist you usually will pay more...
what does that average out to like $1200 a year in maintenance? $217 for an oil change is a rip off. They got you at the dealership on that water pump but it is what it is. I also find people replace things that are not needed. Like your lower control arms? New bushings should be like $40 bucks plus pressing them in I believe(could be wrong). Only upgrade if you are tired of it. Maintenance is always cheaper(unless something crazy goes wrong) than a new car payment + the insurance that goes along with it.

Adding the new tires this year will put me at around $1,600 a year. It's still less than new car payments, but I might be better off buying a real "beater"... Civic SI or something. Although I don't know if I can go back to one I'm hoping my tires will pass inspection so I can have more time to think about what I want to do with it. I either put new tires on my OEM wheels ($450), get new tires and a new wheel ($900), or trade it in for something else. They also didn't fix the rough idle issue I've been having, so that could be another money pit. They told me to wait to see if another code popped up within the next couple of days. |

What do you guys with xdrive and 19" wheels use for tires? I'm perfectly safe with 235/35-19 as far as the xdrive system is concerned, yes?
