like ass chinks said, the 17-85 seems like it fits you well. 17 is decently wide (i have it on my 17-40 and have no complaints) and it will zoom to 85mm which is definitely a plus. AND it has IS so you can shoot in low light conditions and not have to worry much.

i had the same predicament before, but after i bought my walk around lens, i found it does pretty much everything i want so i haven't been tempted to buy a new lens for a while. All my money has gone into my coche. Although i really want the 10-22 specially after playing with OC335i's.

Oh i forgot to mention. If you dont have a 50mm prime or if your up for it a 30mm prime, you should definitely get one. These are very sharp and because of the low f stop, you can get great bokeh and lots of DOF.

If money isint a factor, i'd probably go with a 30mm prime because of the crop body on the xti.

I wish I had a little bit more range on my 17-55, I don't know how you do it with the 17-40.

What lens do you currently own? If you need a walkaround lens the 17-85 IS is much better. 70-300 IS would be nice for outdoors, portrait, or still shots, but indoors it'll be tough since you are zoomed in so much.
