Yup. Thanks for confirming the noise went away when you replaced the rear shocks. That is definitely the source but it is not clear yet what the fix is. I was told EDC firmware as a "best guess" but some owners from Germany are talking about defective dampers - meaning they need to be replaced. I'm keeping an eye on that forum to see if they provide any more useful/hard data. This noise is super annoying.

Thanks for keeping an eye on this. My car has this issue really bad depending on the road surface and how cold it is. Not the best situation when you live in a climate that gets very cold and the roads are terrible haha.

As an aside, I'd like to install some eibach springs but don't want to until this issue is resolved. I couldn't imagine what kind of pain it would be attempting to get warranty work done on a car with modified suspension parts. Especially if it turns out to be defective dampers.

I'm hoping its a software update that can be pushed OTA to save an annoying trip to the dealer with wait times, etc.

Solved?! Maybe.....think so.....hope so!

Solved? Maybe......think so.

Finally got my '22 into the dealer @ 5400miles. Same drill as others: describe the noise in detail, leave the car, wait a day, get a call that they "couldn't hear it", even with 2 techs in car (BTW, tech told me mine was the first ever in for any service--that's how few out there).

Next day: up to the dealer at 8AM to take the tech for a drive (about 40 degrees out). I drove, tech in passenger. He couldn't hear it--#!&$--but I could. Switched seats---20-25 mph, semi-smooth streets, and ....... ta-dah! He heard it.

Next day got the call: R&R right rear shock and associated. Been driving a bunch since maybe 150 mi) and......... I HAVE NOT heard it! Or it's so diminished I can't hear it. Fingers crossed this was "THE" fix. Copy of repair order attached. I'm guessing it was bad shocks (R side only?) and/or mounts. Will update here if it comes back---hoping never. Like the car SOOOO much more now. Good luck--hope this helps!

Did you delete the EDC using code? Or did you use one of the modules for the G20? I know that the suspension components are the same, but just curious if the programming/modules are the same as well and if you ran into any issues there?

Please keep us posted. They replaced both of my rear shocks and mounts in December and no change on mine BUT the owners in Germany are reporting that there are specific replacement absorbers from January forward that will fix it, but I have not been able to confirm any details like specific part revision numbers, etc.

If I were a betting man, BMW will make this a running production change and ONLY replace shocks when owners complain.

Has anyone found that this issue is getting worse? I'm most certainly going to address it with my service department, but I was thinking about just waiting until my next maintenance appointment. I figured by waiting, I'd give BMW some more time to record similar cases. I don't think I'm going to wait. It's starting to sound like I have a wooden box full of tennis balls in the trunk.

Edit:
I've been stewing about this all day. I'm curious to know what everybody else here thinks:
Should this issue be thought of as a mere annoyance, or is it something that could actually get worse— to the point of a really expensive repair?

I think so. That said, we have had some cold weather in upstate New York and I have found that this problem is more pronounced in cold weather.

Still in a holding pattern. We know it's the adaptive dampers in the rear suspension (M240i and 230i with adaptive dampers only). We just don't know what the fix is yet.

jmelaw reports that his dealer replaced his rear dampers in February and the noise went away for him.

I had my rear dampers replaced December and the noise didn't go away. The BMW field engineer suspected it was an EDC software change, then about a month later I was told the noise was considered "normal."

Owners in Germany are talking about it too and one is claiming that BMW fixed it in production from January forward by changing the rear dampers (supposedly a new part number revision) BUT none of this has been confirmed yet.

Hoping this last "rumor" is true and we can all get on with getting our cars fixed. I've had this noise since day 1 and it is super annoying.

I'm also starting to see some condensation build up in one headlight which is apparently another "issue" we may all have to deal with.

Took my 11/22 build in and dealer logged the noise, and said that replacement of the right rear shock was not the fix, so waiting here as well.

Did they have to test drive it? If so, we’re you able to request to go with on the drive?

Yes, took the top tech out from the BMW center here in MA and was able to replicate the noise, no specific remedy from BMW at the time, he logged the complaint and we are waiting to hear back.

Okay, officially have an appointment with my dealer this Friday to look at the noise. It’s very minor but bothers me enough to at least just have it logged. Requested that I go with on their “test drive” to point out the clunking

I’ll report back here with their findings. Also plan on doing my first oil change this weekend (DIY) so definitely not letting them keep it over the weekend, they already offered me a loaner on the phone..

.
JMELAW HERE Quick follow up: It was ONLY my pass rear shock and related hardware that was replaced (not both sides) - I posted the repair order with part numbers above if that helps. If part #s are the same, maybe it was a production change in shocks that quelled it--or maybe a mount, etc. I'm no tech, so guessing.

FWIW, my noise remains "gone" for now. Probably 5-600 miles post-repair.
My hope is that sometime, within the next 12 months, I'll stop listening for the noise to recur too....... Good luck-

Glad to see this thread is still going. Like I originally thought, this is looking like a design issue with the adaptive rear shocks or software. This is why I decided to not pursue any parts replacement back when I started this thread.

I still don’t see any Advanced Information from BMW on this, nor do I see an updated rear shock part number. It is possible there’s a part index revision (the 1 and 2 mentioned by another poster) that holds the key to this. Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to know the revision index when you order a part as a dealership technician. If this is the case, the older index needs to be removed from the parts supply chain.

As soon as I can get some confirmation, I’ll be slapping some new rear shocks on my car. For what it’s worth, BMW shows none of this part number available in the US right now. So maybe this is happening. Let’s hope.

Ok so my car must have knew it was in trouble and was acting on its best behavior… no suspension noises AT ALL when I brought it to my dealer. He didn’t hear it, neither did I.. I guess it’s much less of an issue in warmer weather?

Either way, they said to check back when it comes time for the next oil change to see if there are any service bulletins or updated part number. They didn’t want to try replacing the shock since they claimed there have been no changes and that the issue would still be present. At least they didn’t try to pull the “I don’t hear anything, you are crazy” card and seemed to believe the issue is present.

I guess the next step, as others have noted, is to continue to wait until either there is a confirmed new part number or service bulletin. At least I have it on record and +1 more added to the list of reports.

I think this is important, and I hope that everyone here has taken THAT initial step. This issue has been driving me nuts for a while now and I STILL haven't mentioned it to my dealer's service department. It's been my intention to do so at the time of my next oil change, but I might swing up there sooner. For everyone of us that is bugged by this, there are probably a fair number of owners that don't think it's a big deal and might not even mention it. We need everyone to make a stink so that it doesn't get swept under the rug. It it doesn't get fixed, this might be my last BMW.
