I'm toying with the idea of getting my soon to be 4 year old son a large lizard. He's heavily into dinos and likes lizards...Thoughts from any experienced lizardkeepers?

we tried a gecko for my son when he turned 6. bought a really nice terrarium with all the appropriate swag and lights needed to keep the gecko happy and healthy. well...the novelty wore off after a couple of weeks because the gecko liked to bite. it wasnt harmful in any way, but it would startle small kids, and they would drop it. so...it pretty much stayed in the terrarium and basically, i ended up having to take care of the damned thing. they feed on live crickets, so you also need a small cage to keep crickets alive. we ended up giving it to another family who had other reptiles. apparently, we are not "reptile people."

Declawing is beyond inhumane. Imagine having the tips of your fingers cut off at the first knuckle and then using those tips to support your body weight as you walk. Also renders their greatest weapon useless in the event that they need to defend themselves.

One of my close friends is the same way. I have to put Hamilton outside when he and his wife come over to the house. It's also somewhat hysterical that Hamilton loves him. He gives two shits if anyone else comes over and couldn't be concerned with their presence, but if Nathan comes by he wants to be right on top of him. I personally think they can sense when someone is allergic and in their ever psychopathic sense of cat humor just want to push them over the edge.

Exactly! My wife had a cat when we first met. Lulu. AKA "Satan." This cat would shred anyone who looked at it. Of course it took a liking to me immediately. I'd spend the night at her place occasionally and would often wake up to find Lulu draped over the top of my head like a hat, fast asleep on my pillow. I'd be itching and sneezing the rest of the day.

I would have a girl over at the end of a date and we'd end up on the couch and this cat would saunter over and be sweet and purr and jump on her lap. The girl would find this cute and give the cat a pet, at which time it would literally jump up and attack which ever girl was next to me in the face like the 'face-hugger' alien from the Aliens movie. My date would scream and run off with the mood ruined.

I'd end up going to bed alone - and my cat would jump up and snuggle next to me, content that she had managed to fend of the 'competition'.
I assume the cat's name was cockblock!

We have a Norwegian as well (it's my daughter's cat) along with a Maine Coon that my wife had when we got married.

Both are huge 18+lbs or more and scary looking, but are the easiest going cats you would ever see.

It's like they are on a perpetual "high". You could set a bomb off behind either of them and it wouldn't phase them!

Mine is a rescue and was a couple of years old when I brought him home. The vet thinks he is a NFC/MC mix. He's 22 pounds and a mix of straight up odd behavior'd and the perfect pet. He doesn't pant like the NFC but his meow is pretty deep and often chirps like MC's do. He's as chill of a cat as I have ever seen; like you said completely unaffected by some things but when the mood strikes him, he is nothing shy of the devil. Has a lot of K-9 tendencies. He doesn't like to be all up on you, but he does generally linger within 2-3 feet of wherever I am just to hang out. Although I'd prefer him to be a strictly indoor cat he spends quite a bit of time outside in the evening after I'm home from work defending the perimeter. Several times a week I'm gifted with decapitated random animals from the neighborhood, mostly field mice and moles but he did manage to catch a rabbit a few months ago.

Perhaps, but probably unlikely. I would imagine that the number of mixed NFC's in the United States is in the single digits.

Of the approximately 89,000,000 cats in America, there are currently only about 500 'Wegie's' in the entire country - very very rare. We waited about 18 months on a list for ours and the father was flown in from Denmark.

http://www.acfacat.com/norwegian_for...t_synopsis.htm

Also, suprisingly, the Wegie has a very odd meow. It's more like a high pitched whine than an actual meow.

Maine Coon is quite common here in the USA and many people get them mixed up. The easiest way to tell is the nose - no other cat has the straight nose - think of the Bull Terrier - where the slope is inverted.

Best explanation below:

Good to know. After looking at your reference you're exactly right. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showp...5&postcount=10

Not sure the name of the person...but we got her from Matthews NC I believe. It was actually my wife's Brother that set everything up.

He breeds Norwegian Elkhounds and we have two of those. We did end up paying quite a bit. I just thought it was funny that we had dogs and a cat that were both Norwegian.

He gets a crazy amount of money for his dogs....all of it by word of mouth. Has people from all over the east coast waiting on some of his litters, so he knows a lot of different people especially in NC.

Crazy things is that we have a Miniature Schnauzer as well that replaced a dog that my wife had that lived to be almost 19 years old. She had that dog longer than I had been around. I let her grieve for a few months, and when I thought she was ready...I got her the Mini. Her brother arranged that as well.

But I paid considerably more for the Schnauzer ($2K) than I did for my daughter's cat. The Elkhounds were free as he let my wife pick 1 from one litter, and then another from another litter a year later so he would have a playmate.

Too funny - I imagine our two cats are related.

That's pretty cool. I didn't know there were that few around. Sadly, she will be moving out when my daughter gets married in May.

We have cared for her while our daughter finished college, and I have grown quite attached. My in-laws live in NC, and we live near Landrum just a few minutes from NC. So it wasn't that far.

We got our Schanauzer from NC too. Can't remember the breeders, but her brother knew them. I supposedly got a deal on him, and I thought....yeah right. Then I seen some breeders getting $3K+.

Shocked me. We live in horse country, so I'm used to hearing about those prices....but we wouldn't do anything different now looking back on it.
