I don't think some of you realize how far behind the 335i is in lap time, compared to the new M3.

For example the quicker more agile 135i was just tested by Motor Trend.

Reno-Fernley Raceway, lap distance 2.74 miles.
Motor Trend lap times:

135i - 163.93 sec

M3 sedan - 154.2 sec

Diff. of 9.73 seconds, I believe it would be a bigger gap with a stock 335i.

So, some of you thinking adding $10,000 worth of aftermarket parts to a 335i will make a car as fast as M3.

Think again.

The performance gap in lap times, is HUGE.

For other comparisons, here is the C63 and IS-F lap times:

C63 - 158.0 sec, 3.8 sec back of M3

IS-F - 158.6 sec, 4.4 sec back of M3

The M3 just works it competition around the track, it is not even close.

with mods you might get the hp up. but the overall handling and the other tech's might not be right with mods. the best thing would be to get a m3.

Again....

The 335 is the top end model of the 3-series...

...the M3 is the bottom end model of the M series

Whay are they being compared?

So to sum up, I would stick with the 335i because its a better value. Just chip it and throw in a LSD and its still under 55k Take a driving class or two and you will beat M3's!
fwiw my buddy sells cars at Nissan, they have pre sold 3 first one was discounted to $105K to get people in the door, 2nd and 3rd sold for $115K the cars will easily have a $40K markup. Which is stupid to me thats price gouging like a mofo.

335i is where its at for me. Mods galore, they are only getting better and you dont need an LSD with AWD.

Not very many semi luxury cars out there running 11s with a few boltons. Even the Supra needs a single turbo conversion to get into the 11s. I never saw much better then mid 12s and 13s with the stock twin setup

You've got that wrong. The M3 is the top end of the 3 series and the 335 is next down the line.

Yes, but you could throw a JB on the 135i or 335i and significantly lower that gap for peanuts. That takes care of the straights, for the twisties: There is no way the Ms suspension is 10,000 better.

Sorry, I'm right.

Go to your dealer and pick up a 3-series brochure. No sign on the M3.

But wait, don't worry. The M3 is in the M-series brochure!
