Strange, you could always contact customer/technical services regarding the QE.Has the car ever had chains work in the past under warranty ?as this can affect the work needing done as BMW will have a record of this and adjust the eligibility of the car as such.

Mine is a 2008 e92 with the same engine as yours. Had it done early May with Ridgeway BMW

The dealer said they would make a phone call and see if they can get my car in for the recall, when they rang back they said they was told that my car isn't down for having this done, i can only assume as mines a e93, that my vin isn't on the list of authorised cars yet, so il wait a month or 2 and try again.

The dealer also said that this was "quality of life" fix to reduce excess noise from the tensioner and only the tensioner would be replaced.

Im guessing the dealer hasn't had any cars in for this yet otherwise he would have known about cars that have done more than 80k km also have to have chains checked.

The dealer was helpful and did ring head office so can't complain.

Took my 318d to Hungerford this morning. They say it takes 3 days. Have a Mini - a swollen up Mini called a Paceman. It's OK but has 19 inch wheels so not as comfy as my BM.

Got is back yesterday evening. It's a 2008 e91, and seems no different to before it went in. I asked them to look at the clutch - they said flywheel is just beginning "to leak". I'm not sure what this means but as they quoted over £1200 to replace flywheel and clutch with no labour charges (it was all in bits at the time) it seemed a bit steep. It's all a risk but I decided when and if the flywheel goes then I'll get it done at an independent, not paying BMW spare parts prices.
They gave me a print out that says both timing chains changed. No charge. I now have a record on file of the work done, though not the complete list of items changed.

Does anyone know if they'd have had to drain out the oil to do the job?

Tony

Mines booked in for the QE in a few weeks time. The car already has an updated crank, chains, guides, etc from when it was repaired under warranty in 2013. (Brief history: noisy engine, ticking sound, into dealer, out a week later with it all fixed) Apparently they need the car for a couple days.

When mine was done under warranty everything was removed including gearbox, flywheel and head. I have a complete parts list including headgasket kit, oil and filter. Total bill was just shy of £3.5k

Ps. Only took just over a day and that was because they had to order in new injector seals as they had none in stock.

Had 108,000 miles when symptoms developed. After the repair the engine was so quiet! It's on 141,000 miles now and even though I can't hear any chain noise the dealer wants to change the top chain with the latest parts I expect.

Edit: it has the N47D20A engine

Had the work done on my car in May this year but I still think the chain is pretty noisy and there is a definite matelic rubbing that fluctuates with engine revs. What feet do people think I have to stand on to take it back and say I still think it's noisy this late after the work's been done?

Got a September 2008 120d SE convertible with the n47 engine. Mileage is high at 167k but has full Bmw service history apart from one service in May 2015. I have been told by Bmw that there are no outstanding qe for this car ! However from what I have been reading on this forum , the car would appear to need to have it checked and if necessary the work done. It had always been serviced regular so that is probably the reason why it has not broken ? Or is it indeed not one of the ones that has problems . Confused !!

I think it depends on the exact model of N47 engine, AFAIK not all of them are included. This should be noted by the door.

This is not really about the engine, it is about the chain tensioner. Bmw possibly had more than one supplier. That is my take on it anyway.

N47D20c is the engine type and BMW have reiterated no qe for this car
Has anyone ever used BM Autoparts UK of West Bromwich. I think they were listed on this forum some time ago but I haven't noticed any comments about their services . They are Bmw specialists ? I am seriously considering having the new timing chains and tensioner fitted as mine isn't one of the cars listed and I can't afford to risk it , so getting it fixed before it happens would seem the best option.

How is everyone else getting on with this?

BMW have postponed the booking three times now. It was booked in again for tomorrow, but just had a call to say the bulletin was updated yesterday and they are now using updated\revised parts which are of course on back order. Now booked in on 3rd of Aug.

Not sure if I'm getting the run around.... Car is only at 53k miles, so hopefully nothing is about to fail imminently, but would like to see where BMW stand if it did!

Can somebody explain to me how the recall works? I've got a 2008 E90 with N47D20O0. I don't think I got any issues with the engine, although there is a squeak when starting which im guessing is the tensioner, but I'm not too bothered about that, it's mainly that I just popped 100k miles and think it would be a good idea to get the engine checked. I'm wondering of the costs etc. of getting a check/job like this.
