If I am not mistaken, the boost tapers off at the top end (to 8psi?). I believe it was mentioned that the small turbos couldn't flow enough on the top end to keep up with the added power.

Shiv- come on and give us some details. Edmunds must have recorded some 0-60 and 1/4 miles times/traps. Cant you share that with us. Edmunds doesn't read this board, I promise.

Is it................

A. Under 4.2 0-60
B. 4.2-4.35
C. 4.36-4.5
D. 4.5-4.6

and

A. Under 12.5 1/4 mile
B. 12.5-12.6
C. 12.6-12.7
D. 12.7-12.8

You'll probably see this comparison graph in an upcoming road test about our car. I hope I don't get in trouble for posting it up first

Was their testing done with 91 or 93 octane? (added: looking again at the dyno in CA, im sure it must be 91)

Congrats on getting them to review your car! Im sure this will get the word out nicely

Yes, we fully plan to start shipping ou kits by the end of this month. Just finishing up the user viewing software right now. We decided that end-user would really benefit from a diagnostics program that showed and logged rpm/boost/afr/ign timing/duty%/vehicle speed/etc,. Not only is that pretty cool, it also helps when it comes to troubleshooting any mis-installation. I should have that software done this upcoming week and then we'll test it for bugs. During that time, we'll be fine tuning the predictive boost feature to slow down boost rise in the first 2 gears. Mostly for selfish reasons than anything else as I'm going back to the drag strip next week to make up for yesterday's wheelspinnin' spectacle. I see thank you. I wonder if there may b some sort of restrictions that play into this aswell. Maybe and upgrade in the downpipes may help.

The biggest restriction is the actual turbine housing itself. It's small and sized for instantaneous boost response. There is only so much exhaust that can flow through it without getting choked. Upgrading the exhaust housings, or the entire turbocharger units themselves, will make it possible for the system to hold more boost up top but at the expense of boost response and low end torque. Downpipes and exhaust upgrades will help a bit but the biggest issue are the turbos themselves.

in your opinion do u think the new 335i with the ecu update producing the less hp in the top end effects a noticable difference in speed and times?

-lumi
They will probably do all the comparisons with the ringer press car since that is the car that they did the full battery of tests on. "Steve's" car was only used for a production car dyno test. It was down something like 25whp up top and none of us think that had anything to do with the ecu update. Instead, it most likely had to do with press cars (esp. turbocharged ones) almost always being slightly "tweaked" versions of production cars. Usually not enough to be obvious (except in the case of the Toyota Supra press car back in the 90s that ran 12s out of the box!) but just enough to give it a little unfair advantage during magazines testing when they know testing conditions aren't always ideal and that the press cars from other manufacturers are also going to be tweaked a bit. This is why magazines tests on preproduction press cars always need to be taken with a grain of salt

Cheers,
shiv

I got access to the roadspeed sensor today. I'll see what I can do. While it shouldn't be very hard to clamp with our computer, I have to make sure that doing so doesn't have an adverse effect on dynamic traction control. Wouldn't want some wierd handing characteristic at 150+mph, now would you?

I just tested the new speed limit defeat feature by setting it so that the ECU doesn't see anything more than 30mph. And then I drove at higher speeds and nothing was out of the ordinary. No DTC freakiness. No flashing lights. That is a good sign. It also tells me that the signal that I'm clamping isn't the same signal that the DTC system is used to manage vehicle dynamics. So yes, it looks like we got it licked.

I still have to test to see if the car can do more than 150mph. I'll save that for the dyno later this week. So yeah, you non-Sport guys may not have to upgrade your ECU afterall

If I get a 335i which is looking very good i would like it so that I could have that there are alot of places to test that kind of speed around here kinda but yes i would love to see how fast it would go with the speed limit defeat im thinking probably around say 175-190....because a 2001 BMW M5 with just a stage 1 ecu upgrade can do..194 so yea

These are great numbers.

One question, if and when 135i comes to the states, would I be able to run this same software?

Thanks in advance.

ps. Keep up the good work.

My guess is the high 160's, as the HP dips toward the end of the range and drag will prevent much gain past 6K. Just a guess though, I'd love to be wrong
