I have 106,000km..initial set was installed at 85,000km, front unit went at 91,000km...15,000km with the current set, always smoked "a bit" same scenario as with the initial set but I haven't pushed this set at all like the first one when Shiv came to tune out the misfire back in March when we did 4-500 runs in 5 days running 15-18psi runs all the way to near redline as misfire would only happen in 3rd gear at around 6300-6500rpm...current set has seen maybe total of 100 pulls since being put on 95% of the pulls at 17.5psi and below

Oil has been changed every 10,000km

Given the power levels the car is putting down I honestly don't care about having to add a liter of oil every 2.500km or the smoke I get sometimes, although obviously if possible I'd like to fix it...my worry/question is IF this oil is indeed leaking out the turbine side into the exhaust how/does/can it affect turbo operation/longevity

I don't mind smoking a bit but the wife has banned the the kids from the BMW. I dont want to drive my MDX.

did u have an oil catch can before installing the RB? Im wondering if the smoking may be related due to previous damage caused by the occ when running stock turbos.

I did have an oil catch can and it was custom with 3/4 hoses. What I want to know is what this damage could be?
Has anybody ever used an oil scavenge pump?

Sorry, I should have included more information in my first post. The car had 100k miles on it when the turbos were installed. I have 105k miles now. Full catless, FBO, and JB4 custom map with 15.5 psi max (with my boost gauge usually reading 16.1-16.3 as my peak). I only run 93 octane, no meth. The turbos were installed by a BMW tech, but as I understand it, so were a few other people's.

Georgesmooth and cotmfk are you running a fully catless exhaust?
Fully catless. AR DP with AE Exhaust.

I change the oil every 10 000km , use the standard 5w 30 castrol edge oil.
After the install of the RB's i drove around for 1000km with stock downpipes and exhaust. Did not see any bit of smoke. After 1000km i put my downpipes and vanguard exhaust back on and the smoking started.

In the end it might not be damaging anything and i don't mind filling up some more oil if that is what it takes , but this is just annoying to spit out a cloud of smoke everywhere you stop. It smells terrible , can't even drive with the windows down. People looking at your car like your driving a piece of junk. It just doesn't fit a expensive car like this.

Next week my car will be in the shop , il remove the downpipes then to check the turbo's for play and see if i can find a trace of oil coming into the exhaust.

Someone needs to try those oil pumps that are used on the rear mounted remote turbo systems. See Pontiac GTO STS turbo.

http://ststurbo.com/universal_turbo_systems

They claim its their oil pump but I know there are universal ones out their probably.

This topic is getting hot. I am dropping off my car tomorrow to take of the DPs and check the turbos.

These journal bearings can not really fail, unlike the ball bearings, worst case you get the shaft broken/crack due to wear and tear but I think it is equally likely without the oil leaking issue.

Anyway, let's do some smoking coparison here, on a scale of 1-5 with 5 smoking constantly and 1 smoking occasionaly where would you put yourself?

I'd say mine is about 3-4, even when its not smoking the smell is there. (full catless exhaust partially to blame).

Mine were a 5 out of 5. I'll post again when I get repaired ones back. Not really fair to rate damaged ones.

Rob has been A++++ to work with. Rob feels that oil contamination was what made my turbos go out. I'd post a pic if it allowed me to. Maybe I am too new??? Maybe I can email someone for them to post...

Adam. You most certainly have my blessing. And I can tell you that full 5 rating was solely from the rear bad unit. The front was squeaky clean.

alright here are the 4 pics i got from Adam...now that I think of it my rear turbo also has some oil on it but up until this point i was attributing it to the rear intake tube having blowby oil coming down...i guess we'll see tomorrow/wed when they're inspected..

Clap135 I don't have any pics, but bank 1 leaking externally near journal bearing. Bank 2 both internally and externally. This is what was relayed through my mechanic and the one who took the pics. Since I wasn't there, I can't be more specific. Maybe my OCC somehow made bank 1 leak, and oil contamination was what killed turbo 2. The OCC is gone now so should no more in a day or so when I pick up vehicle from mechanic. Fingers crossed. I may move boost down to 15.5 to be safe. Haven't fully made up my mind. Goal was to buy turbos to run high boost more safely. Given flow of turbo, still HUGE improvement over stock even at low boost. My theory, totally unsubstantiated, is that we are running too much boost on the RB turbos.

that oil drip is not good. Car should not be leaking oil. I would definitely try to figure out where this oil drip is coming from. I assume you had all new gaskets etc when you had the re-install done? When i had my stock units replaced, i even ordered all new bolts, washers just to be safe.

Everything on install fresh. Unknown on how oil became contaminated. My mechanic is top notch. I would stack him against anyone in the world. We can rule out install issues from him. I did have another person work on system and mess with oil cooler. It is possible that there was debris in the new part...unlikely, but somehow something got in there and damaged turbo. Anything is possible I suppose.
