That's my favorite part of servicing my car. So far I've got to use a 328i, 328xi, and 535xi which were all newer than my car. Not too shabby!

Def getting a loaner is fun.. So after speaking with my SA it looks like there's another process after the lifter has been replaced. From what he says they need to replace or add rockers? no clue what that is.. but hopefully it gets fixed and that the noise goes away for good this time.

Question, I cant read every page but my 2006 bmw 325xi still ticks here and there, and I have never had it worked on in regards to this issue. I have CPO and was wondering if I should push them to fix this HARD now since I have like 6 months before CPO is DEAD?

And from what I read there is still NO perm fix for the ticking and still NO harm to the N52 engine from the ticking noise correct?

Thank you for any help on this?

Cylinder head replaced in March 2011, problem solved. Link below should help some, click the link, in the link for a decent summary.

BMW added rocker change in the latest TSB from what I read. No one has been able to provide the latest TSB though...

Those showed engines made between the 08 model years and mine is an 06 engine...

I am more scared if the Technician screws something up over a ticking noise, as long as it does NO damage in the long term I might leave it, can someone verify this??

Have you gotten any clarification on your issue? I have an 06 as well and I just put my car in the shop for this problem. They've had it since yesterday at 8am and the technician says he hasn't heard a ticking. I really hate to keep making multiple trips to the dealer but it seems like that's what it's going to take. Any other advice besides showing them the TSB?

take video when u hear it.. just like on the first post says.. thats how i just got my cyl head replaced.. every time i took it in i showed them a video of the ticking sound and no questions asked they started to work on the car.. but of course when u do record it make sure u get ur vin/date/ and mileage so u can verify its ur car making the noise (ticking)

Thanks for the heads up. I missed that in the first post. Since they changed my oil, they couldn't hear the ticking but I planned to take a video like you said and bring it in to them. The dealer actually seemed willing to help provided I can show them the ticking.

Basically yes im sure it sounds bad, but if you were to just let it go and live with the ticking is something being damaged or does no one really know for sure?

Thanks
Based on what I read in the thread. The lifter ticking itself is not a huge issue other than sounding ugly. However, the fact that the oil pressure is not building up enough in the engine and lubriacating the parts properly leads to scoring of some of the parts, which in turn, can lead to eventual engine failure.

So the lifter tick itself is not an issue, but the low oil pressure is.

On a side note, I picked up my car last week, noticed the lifter tick when I took it in for inspection. On the weekend I brought it into my indy shop and he added some molyslip to the crank case... no more lifter tick for me, even on cold morning starts. (so far)

Obviously the revised engine head would be ideal, but I don't have warranty on the car anymore.

Is there any relation with the low oil pressure and the ticking of the lifter? I believe that I have a slight (as of a month or so ago) head gasket leak that needs to be taken care of. Could this be the reason for the ticking in conjunction with the loss of oil pressure due to the leak? Before posting, I did check the oil level (in-dash read-out) and it was maxed. I even drove around the block several time hoping to "warm" it up because it has been sitting idle in the garage for 2-3 days. This is the first time that it has happened. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: '06 with 58k miles and is occasionally pushed here and there but not abused. Warranty ended.

Add me to the list of people who've had their lifters replaced (under CPO warranty). The SA told me that the possibility of the ticking returning was 50-50, and if so it would still be covered under warranty, even after my warranty expires. So that's good news...

I think mine still ticks but it may just be other noises from the cold weather. For now I'll leave my dealer alone but will revisit this in the spring if it persists.

Guys...need your opinion
Just took my car in. They want valve head cover gasket needs to be replaced. thats 800 im going to have to eat. I took it in for the valve lifter tick out of warranty (I have taken it in under warranty on numerous occasions for the noise and it was never fixed. they always gave me excuses and misdiagnoses blah blah blah) Now they are asking for 1600 naturally out of my pocket now that the warranty has warn off. Called BMWNA today and the investigation will take a few days.. What should I do??? is it worth the 1600 to fix worst case scenario? they want to replace the rocker arms and the valves. Is it worth it to potentially fix this tick?

If you took it in for the lifter problem during the warranty period then pending on the time frame then hopefully BMW will take care of it with no charge to you. I would think you have records of all of this during the warranty period.

I see now BMW added the rockers to the first so-called "fix". BMW replaced my lifters under warranty, and that did not fix the problem. Click on my utube sig. and you will see a vid. of my engine after the new lifters were replaced. BMW replaced the head under warranty with the new design and that fixed the problem.

Ask your SA if the lifter/rocker replacement does not fix the problem, will they replace the cylinder head going forward on their wallet?

Exactly right. If one makes a complaint during the warranty period, then the complaint is supposed to be recorded. If the dealer made no record or has some excuse why they have to charge you $thousands, then now's a good time to find an independent mechanic. They're better and cheaper.
