This engine fits on the BMW bolletin, as it's from 96 and it's a N52, but on the other hand, the improved new heads shown on the bolletin are just for B30, it means for the 3000cm3...
Does any one have or know if this engine (N52B25 2500cm3 from 2006 E92 325i) also have this problem?
Thanks
The N52B25 have the problem. Also there is a modified new cylinder head
available pt. no. 1112 7591618.

I heard the ticking today, Car was cold and I opened the hood and heard the noise. I have a 335xi, I'm going to get an oil change to see if anything changes, Is this a 328 problem or does this affect the n54 engines as well?

It's really only N52. The N54 is supposed to tick. What you are hearing is the direct injection.

Took my 2009 in on Monday and told my SA the lifters were ticking sporadically (and of course they sounded fine that morning), and from doing my research it would probably need the lifters and head replaced. SA called me in the afternoon and said they would replace the lifters. I was to get a callback yesterday with an update, but didn't hear anything. I'm hoping they went ahead and changed out the head also, thus the extra time. My salesman said they keep a supply of heads in the shop. If not, I'll just have to take it back in a few months to get that done. Fortunately the dealership is 2 blocks from my office. And they have good loaners. They gave me a 3 series x drive with only 1200 miles on it this time. We'll see what I find out today. This is a great thread, it has helped me out immensely!

Hi guys. Im sorry I didn't read through the whole thread, its long! I just purchased a cpo 2009 328 LCI. It ticks occasionally. Should I have the dealer replace the lifters and the head? Will they give me trouble? Is there anything else they should replace? Thanks in advance!

Just review the last 10-15 pages, and you should find most answers to the questions you have asked. CPO is a good starting point as BMW will pay for the problem if you have one. Take some time and review the end of this thread ( 10-15 pages ) as everyone has had different experiences, and is at different points in the "BMW procedure", so there is no one answer. Hope this helps some...

I'm in the same boat. Over the last 2 months my car has ticked a couple times and I've been putting off going to the stealer.

Engine:
Cylinder head(s) and cylinder block. All internally lubricated parts including: pistons, piston rings and pins; crankshaft, main and connecting rod bearings; connecting rods; camshaft and bearings; timing chains and/or belts; sprockets; rocker arms and shafts; valves, valve springs, upper spring plates (retainers); valve collets, guides, and seats; hydraulic valve clearance compensators (lifters); oil pump assembly. Dipstick assembly; vibration damper; flywheel/ring gear; upper and lower timing case covers; intake and exhaust manifolds; engine mounts; valve cover(s); oil pan.
Would Powertrain Plus cover this issue?

I was planning on keeping this thing forever, but if BMW won't cover this repair, is this a reason to get rid of the car before the problem gets any worse?

mine has been ticking for 7K miles

its loud

sounds like a diesel

it bothers the crap out of me

has the car skipped a beat?

not at all...

i have a few an idea tho for possibly fixing this in house and for pennies on the dollar

someone can tell me if i'm retarded and it won't work

The basic issue is a lack of oil supply in the head right?

I used to be a Honda junky a few years ago and i built an engine that needed an extra oil supply going to the head for vtec to be engaged

Vtec won't engage unless it has a certain amount of oil pressure mesaured by the solonoid

anyways

you would take the 1.8L longer stroke non vtec block and mate it with a vtec head and wala cheap horsepower

the 1.8L non vtec block didn't have the oil galleries the vtec blocks had,

so you had to use this

this ran off the oil pressure switch port and just Tee'd off then
you ran a stainless line to the head dumping oil up there

it worked great

thing is, where can i do this?

should i tap it somewhere?

is this even really an option to just dump more oil into the valve cover/Head

my brain was just pondering over it one day

No Engine Tick!

Hello guys,
Last three months of the last year, i have been looking for an e92 coupe and like before every purchase i made, i did a good research on this model for potential issues.
I came across this forum and reading all the horror posts regarding valve ticks really made we restless and i didn't even buy the car yet.
SO one day i find the car that i liked, CPO, '08 328i, manual trans, 25k miles, sapphire black, sport and premium package, etc.
First thing before i even test drove the car, i asked for vehicle master inquiry, service history and it was completely clear, even the oil changes were once a year!
I got great deal on the car and I'm loving it! No issues what so ever!
I bought it at BMW of Escondido, Brecht BMW and i would recommend this dealership to everyone that's in the San Diego area!
Shop foreman is German, and very knowledgeable and helpful!
I wont let anyone else touch my car!
SK

2008 328xi

Well my car started to make the ticking sound a few weeks ago so I took it to the BMW shop on Friday. I just picked it up yesterday and listened by the passenger front tire and no ticking sound. The shop did a good job and was quick, it was covered under warranty so all I had to pay was $50.

I am new to owning a BMW and unfamiliar with the sound of the motor.
After watching some you tube vids I am assuming that the motor does make a minor ticking like sound.

Can someone take a listen to the vid and tell me if this is a normal sounding motor?

Thanks

That is exactly what mine sounds like. I assume its normal because its not the other ticking sound I've seen in other videos. I think the injectors are kind of loud on these engines.

My Car's due for a scheduled maintenance so I'm going to have them check the lifters. Mine ticks like crazy on cold starts (IE: sits for a full 24hs without starting). but it got me thinking. If they're taking the top end apart to get at the lifters and/or head, why don't I look at doing a 3 stage intake swap. It would save me a bunch on labour and hassle to get them to install the thing while it's apart anyways.

Anyone had the same thought and/or done a 3 stage intake swap at the dealer while your car was in for the lifter tick?

Ok... had the exhaust lifters changed today. I've been reading through this whole post since the guy mentioned yesterday that there was a bulletin out on these... my SA said that they have redesigned the lifters and rockers and that he hasn't seen any of them come back.

What are my chances that I'll be done with this?

I'll say less than 50/50 because the design flaw is not on the lifters and rockers, the design flaw is the the head itself, but good luck and you beat the odds.

I guess as long as it gets fixed properly in the end, I'll be happy even if it takes me another trip.

Had my lifters replaced last Monday and heard ticking again Friday night. Brought it right back in and they're having trouble reproducing the ticking.

Have people gotten the head if the dealer can't reproduce the ticking? All I have is a video of it.

I took about 8 videos on different dates with a current newspaper and registration for each time it happened, and put them on a disk. I gave it to my SA. It went to the regional representative, and from there I do not know. However, it worked for me.

My SA said it's so common that they don't need proof of it. They're dicks if they give you a hard time.

My wife's '07 328 was noticeably ticking when I bought it. Soon after purchasing I changed the oil with German Castrol (don't know what previous owner used) and no shi+, ticking is completely gone. I'm not claiming it will solve everybody's ticking, but it worked on mine.
