no

you are mixing information layout vs driver-machine interface or ease of quickly selecting options while driving at speed. You have a split sec to select an option that you need immediately and get instant read on the critical vehicle info and rpm.

I like the iD8 screen, it looks modern and appropriate for today. And this is coming from the owner of a 2021 G20

I am very excited about the M2. Probably won't be able to buy it on launch, but hopefully late 2023-early 2024 I shall be in one. I saw a 230i yesterday, lowered, with wheels too, looked GORGEOUS.

This new screen is far more costly than anything has used in the past. Cost cutting is the last thing this is. BMW is modernizing and this is what it looks like.

Its cost cutting because they bought the same screen from their Supplier instead of making different ones for various models. How hard is it to make a unique version for the M cars that don’t look like an iPad screen to show your gauges.

Its 100% cost cutting and poor design.

It's not just BMW that are being ultra lazy about properly integrating these silly screens. I had an Explorer ST last week for work. I picked up a colleague and he genuinely thought I had placed my iPad on the dashboard.

How wrong can a manufacturer get it?



By the way, this has to be hands-down the least safe vehicle to drive in the rain. I seriously thought about returning it to Avis and getting something else.

I was thinking the same thing and I don't get the point of the pixelation..

Sorry, the cheap screens look horrible. I believe integrating them into the dash would go a long way to improving the look. BMW please see Porsche for how it’s done.

The point most are missing is the tremendous increase in distracted drivers created by phones and screens in general in our vehicles. There are many insurance industry studies on the topic that unfortunately point to it being a huge problem to have so many options at our fingertips while driving, yet we are getting more and larger screens.

I don't think is a matter of age. I'm 30 and I dislike the big screens.

I think my preference for more analogue dash is that it holds up better against time. Technology ages poorly.

My previous e46 m3 dashboard still looks amazingly cool, same with the 911 dashboards - pure class.

Just my opinion and the logic behind it.

The BMW implementation looks pretty decent, way ahead of Tesla's disaster. But neither are very safe. Hence why they are usually sold in concert with loads of active driver aids to prevent accidents.

I love tech and app design & development, its what I do for a living. However I much prefer tactile buttons and physical knobs that you can use by feel and muscle memory in a car. None of my cars have active driver safety aids, but they all have great ergonomics.

Just my personal preference. Driving for me is all about the joy of the driving experience. I accept I am in a tiny minority.

I don't disagree and I'd love for physical controls to remain, but like it or not it's the direction the industry has decided to move forward in. I still think touchscreens can be implemented safely. They don't need to be as busy and distracting, especially while driving. Manufactures can disable some functions (as some system do now) until you come to a stop, they can have dedicated buttons which are braille like textures on the screen with haptic feedback for certain features that should always be available, like climate control. Implementing full touchscreen systems is new to most manufacturers that it's just going to take time to sort out and make it safe and useable, but it can be done.

So when I'm ready to snatch one up myself and negotiate a fair price, they'll be plenty of allocations available..

Humans can be intuitive and will adapt to the changing technology. After awhile, you'll get used to it, rendering this second nature. Capacitive Touch is the future, for better or worst.

Sometimes touch screens just don't do the job better. With cell phones the down side of losing buttons was obviously outweighed by the larger touch screen and virtual buttons.

However I can't imagine Nintendo, Sony Playstation, and Microsoft Xbox releasing a new console with just touch screen controllers and no buttons because it's just a worse form of input relative to physical buttons.

Touch screens are just worse for some things. Imagine removing the steering wheel from the car for a touch screen display that's round (so high tech, round screen!). You could just slide your hand around it to tell the car how to turn. Or just tap virtual left and right arrows. Or get rid of touch screen controls and you could gesture with your hands or point. Just use voice controls and shout "left left left, straight, slight right, more, no left".

Why stop there though. We could replace your 6 speed with a touch screen where you tap the gear you want. Just don't miss a tap if you hit a bump and money shift.

Replace the gas, brake, and clutch pedal with a touch screen you use with your bare feat. No that's silly. Just operate the clutch pedal with foot gestures via camera that sees the movent of your foot. I dunno, maybe voice control is best here too. "clutch in, clutch out, clutch kick!! Full opposite lock left! No reduce steering angle, less throttle, more throttle, brake brake brake!"

But hey, at least you would be getting a a big technology upgrade right? Because screens are new, the more you have and the bigger they are the higher tech the car is. Buttons are old.
