DIY: Retrofitting a Professional HU with USB and Bluetooth
Hi mates!
This time I am showing you how to identify and retrofit a new Professional Head Unit wit built-in USB and Bluetooth features on my e93 from 05/2007 The improvement is very high! Now, I have an USB socket and I don't need my iPod anymore because the USB can organize music by Artist/Songs/PLS Playlists/Styles... and it is very fast when searching a track The sound is now much more clear and the subwoofers have more punch. Bluetooth is enough. It is not the best for me (my old Parrot MKi9100 has more features like A2DP streaming music, real voice recognition...) The built-in bluetooth can read your contact list, you can manage it with the steering wheel buttons and you can dial a number with the voice recognition. But it cannot stream music and you cannot dial a name of your contact list, you have to save it before in the radio memory. PDC is better now because cars before 09/2007 has a buzzer for the PDC, now, the sound is more 'elegant' and in stereo (you can hear it an obstacle is on your left or right) Other features: - OBC (the same than the cluster, fuel consumption, average speed, outside temp...) - Stationary blower: I can program the cabin vent - Better display with much more information ... This is how I did it: Remember that you can see it in HD I hope this could be useful for anybody. I will answer the questions you could have. Regards! PS: Remember that you can watch my other DIY's at www.youtube.com/josejjn EDIT This weekend finally I managed to enable Spanish voice recognition! For me is a great achievement! Of course, english worked perfectly but now is much better Last edited by Jose_JN; 02-11-2013 at 08:20 AM.. |

Finally I have achieved the way to recode the car and get the new style dong instead the old one
Because of my production date I had to cheat the car and tell it that I have a navi instead of the radio but it works! Regards

You have only to recode PDC module having added $663 to the VO and then, change this value at kombi:
HU_VERBAUT_C08 radiostufe_3_4 Thats all.

Keep in mind that if you dont have a e93 or e88 the mic reference is different! Because convertibles have the mic at the steering wheel column but others have it at the roof lights module! For e93/e88: 61138377072 x1 -> 3 pins Connector 61130005197 x4 -> Female Pin 61138384550 x1 -> 12 pins Female Connector 61138387206 x1 -> Connector housing 61316950266 x1 -> Steering wheel column cover 84316977740 x1 -> mic 61119129360 x1 -> Coaxial fakra wire for USB 84109237653 x1 -> USB/Aux Socket Other e9x and e8x: 61138377072 x1 -> 3 pins Connector 61130005197 x4 -> Female Pin 61138384550 x1 -> 12 pins Female Connector 61138387206 x1 -> Connector housing 84316938762 x1 -> mic 84106936148 x1 -> Mic housing 61119129360 x1 -> Coaxial fakra wire for USB 84109237653 x1 -> USB/Aux Socket

If I already have the professional (I have the HiFi system) headunit in my car (which I do) does it have that USB connector on the back of the headunit already to where all I need to do is get the USB cord and AUX/USB plate and recode the car? I already have bluetooth but would like to have a USB port as well.

Maybe, your bluetooth is installed under the carpet of the boot. Check if you have a module there, near the backrest of the right seat. If you don't have it, your head unit is bluetooth and usb capable. If you have the module you have to see if it is a MULF or a ULF. In the first case, usb retrofit is possible with a few pieces, but if you have an ULF, you have to upgrade to MULF which is more expensive. Regards

Production date on my car is 2.23.2007 and the date on the bluetooth thing is 1.31.2007. I guess I can pull out the headunit this weekend and check. I do not see any markings indicating that it's ULF or MULF.
Thanks again. Edit: Here is a pic of what I have.

This is a Telematic Control Unit.
I think you have to change it for a MULF. It is not necessary to dismount for check this. I think it doesn't have a socket for the USB ******ion because it was introduced 09/10 (I have to check this date) but if you want to check it, it is easy to dismount. Regards

Hi José !
Great DIY !!! I have some noob questions... My car is a E82 125i with professional HU. Car was produced in April 2010. I have no bluetooth, no USB, just Aux In... Is my professional HU is Bluetooth and USB capable ? If not, where can I find this HU ? Can you confirm me that I just need to have a Professional HU with Bluetooth and USB built in and no need to install a MULF unit before ? Thank you by advance for your help |

The easiest way to check this is removing it (it is very easy, only 2 screws) and see if there is a sticker with the bluetooth logo on the top. If your HU is not suitable, you have 2 options: - Instal a MULF on the boot with all the wiring needed - Buy a new radio with all the features (No Mulf is needed ) I think the best way is the second one. it is cheaper and easier (I did it), but you could have problems if you have to recode your car at your dealer (if you have to change any ECU for example) but you can put back your old HU and problem fixed. I bought it at eBay, there are several HU around 300€. The rest of the stuff (mic, wires, sockets) can be bought at your dealer for 100€. Regards!

I had to code: Kombi -> for the new Gongs PDC -> for the new Beeps 2Rad for -> - adapt the equalization to my e93, - enable USB (my HU came with this feature disabled) - change the service numbers (I wanted the spanish numbers instead of the english) - adapt it to Spanish cause it came from UK. But most times, it is plug&play and It is not necesary to code (but always recomendable) The best way is add $663 $6nn $6fl to the VO and reset these ecus Regards
