DSC Failure - Engine Cuts out....HELP!

Hi Everyone....

I'm a newbie on the site. Bought an E90 330i about 4 weeks ago and yesterday the thing broke down on me

I've done some searching on this forum and it appears to be quite a common fault with the valve on the Hydro Pump for the DSC unit.

The only difference is, from what I've read, other people who have had this problem are still able to drive their cars.

Basically, it was driving in the terrential rain yesterday and suddenly the DSC Failure error came up and the engine cut out. After attempting to restart it, which it wouldn't, more failure messages appeared.

After the DSC failure it came up with DBC failure (Dynamic Brake Control ?), Transmission Failure, Fuel Pump failure and Tyre Pressure Sensor failure.

I thought I'd found the problem originally (Hydro Pump repair kit) but the fact that it wont start whereas other people with the DSC failure can still drive makes me wonder if its something electrical or a sensor. After the first failure error, losts of other warnings coming up?!

No idea. I've got the car in with Munich Motors (read mixed reviews about them) mainly coz they are a stone throw from my house. The car is covered under a AutoTrust warranty if anyone has heard of them!? I'm currently waiting for MM to run diags to confirm exactly what the problem is....

I did wonder if maybe a replacement ECU? I'm clutching at straws..I know.

Any idea's anyone? Any help appreciated.

Right.....

I guarantee you that the following will fix this.

I had EXCACTLY the same issue and contacted BMWman (www.bmwman.co.uk) and I urge anyone who has issues with a BMW to contact James.

I do not believe I have ever spoken to a more technically sound chap in my life.

Just for reference, BMW wanted to replace the fuel pump and abs system on ours.......just imagine that cost. All because the computer said so.

2 Specialists wanted to replace the injectors and fuel pump, again a fortune.

When I asked said specialists about relay failure i was advise not on this model.




The fix?


£10.40

  • Take yourself off to BMW and ask for part number B61.36.6.915.327. You will receive a blue relay. Yes.....I know!
  • Now if you are going to do this yourself, the part resides with the ECU under the scuttle panel
  • Disconnect the battery in the boot before you do this
  • Remove the pollen filter
  • Remove the scuttle
  • Finally remove the ecu box lid (cream box, driver side engine bay, under the windscreen)
  • Replace the blue relay
  • Reassemble
  • Reconnect
I guarantee you it will be sorted.



FYI, if you look at your dash when you are trying to start the car I am sure you will see that the engine management light is not coming on?

This is the problem, the relay has failed and the ECU isnt coming to life.

Buy the relay, give it to your garage and tell them where it is and to replace it.

If they charge you more than an hours work, you are being RIPPED OFF!

water in battery compartment is the problem
see under the battery if it is full of water should be the problem.
bmw denies that this happens but more and more cases are surfacing.

i had this problem all works but the engine dont start and show dbs dbc tpms pump malfuntction all sort of errors it makes the crank but wont start

the problem was under the battery there are to cables from the battery to the front of the car one of the cables that goes to the engine was broken.

it has been corruted over the years
a long time ago it was with water somehow water came in.... one day i saw that water take the battery out and cleaned all the are .... puted some silicone one the side to never happen again... the cables where affected but i didnt knew .... 1 year later malfunction situation on a roundabaout i brake and all errors poped out ... car doesn,t even start just cranks
toll to bmw 4 days to discover what it was.....never in my mint i thought about the water adventure when bmw calls me to see the cables ooohhhhh i knew it but i couldnt remember.
120€ for a new cable plus 4 hours of work ... they have been about a 2 full days or more looking for the problem but only made me pay 4 hours ... total 550€ but the car is running fine now.....

I was told that too carlos.........wasnt the issue for me even though the battery compartment was damp.

I'd suggest the £10 + 1 hour fix first too

Exactly the same problem afflicted every owner of the Porsche 944 - the infamous "DME Relay", which did the same thing. 944 owners often carried a spare or some link wires, as I did, as failure was so common.

I hope this is your solution!

By the way, dont let the random TPMS, DSC etc errors throw you.

James advised that they are on the same bus as the DDE and when it fails to come to life, the car literally sharts itself.

As xenon says, this is one of "those" relays that should be included in the spare light bulb box for this car.

i am almost sure its this

water in battery compartment is the problem
you have to take the battery out to see the water under the battery
if its not water should be the £10 relay issue

There was water under our battery, no problem.

That particular problem occurs if the seals on that side vent fail and the battery compartment gets full and water splashes over the top terminal.

I cannot see how water at the base of the battery will affect how it works?

The battery in my Clio is swimming 98% of it's life and no problem

the cables that goes to the front are there under the battery and could lead to malfuntion if they are submerse in water.

in my car one of them was so rust that broked and the energy wasn“t going to the engine.
and the error was dsc dbf fuel pump malfuntion tpms monitor all errors and car cranked but doesn“t start.

all the other things lights GPS everything worked. there are too lines behind battery one for the engine and one for the other stuff. only the engine line was broken but the other line was almost broken too.

bmw replaced the cables and off i go

Thing is, in my opinion that area of the car is ALWAYS going to be exposed to the elements with the vent there.

I dont think so but its another avenue for the OP surely

Personally I don't think you can rule anything out. Water has caused similar issues in the E60/1.

We seem to get a multitude of issues from one simple problem. This has been happening since the car's electrical systems have been so intensively linked. Not just on BMW cars either.

Problem is, what causes what?

Fault finding is usually a process of elimination, when the obvious is not clear.

All valid points and they have been noted.

I will make sure to check for water in the battery compartment, I'll check the cables that stem off from the battery are not worn or corroded in any way. If that all looks ok, then I'll try for the relay.

I am still waiting for the diag results from MM too.....
