Typical
That is why so many people around the world complain about American's ignorance when it comes to the rest of the planet.
It takes a K-12 education to know that distribution of wealth (or lack thereof) is a common problem in Latin America and that all these countries have extremely wealthy people. I live in Panama and we're lucky to have a strong middle class and no starving children, and yes, we do have as many BMW's as taxis (as in, it's impossible to find a parking lot that holds more than 15 cars and NOT find a bimmer), but even when you go to places like Bolivia, Honduras or Guatemala you'll find plenty of expensive cars. Most people in LatAm that own a BMW, however, will not post in your forum because: a) Forums are NOT popular here. People simply don't use them. b) They speak Spanish or Portuguese, not English, as their native tongue. So the next time you care to opine using overly generalized terms please keep in mind that the value of your opinion will be equated to your own intellectual value. |

I do'nt know man... I've been in Mexico for a week, haven't seen one Bimmer, I've been to peru and in all the time i've been there (1 month) i've only seen one bimmer. I've been to brazil for one week and seen many audi's and 1 e46. I understand how people their do not post on Forums, that i believe is 100% true, and in south america they do speak spanish and portuguese (hence South America). That is their 1st language. It's cool that Panama has so many bimmer that there are taxi cabs full of them. Would be something cool to check out.

I have two family members in Ecuador that have BMWs and there are some around but not many, one major BMW dealer. However there is a 50% tax imposed on all imported cars not assembled in Ecuador, (only a couple of cars assembled for sale in Ecuador, Mistubishi and Chevy) So a new BMW 335 that would be around 45000 here would cost close to 70000 US in Ecuador. Also forget about bumper to bumper warranty , it does not exist in most of the world outside the US. So in Ecuador you could get a new Mitsubishi Montero for around 22000, so it is a real jump to spend 70000 on a three series when you could get 3 monteros for the same price. With that said the wealthy are wealthy and buy the cars they like whatever the cost.

I went to El Salvador last december and saw the BMW dealer.
I did not have time to go in but they had a 325, and X5 and a motorcycle on the show room. I saw a few 325s on the road.

I think there are BMWs everywhere, in every country.
But there are WAY more BMWs per capita in the US than in any country in South and Central America. Guaranteed. |

Is it not equally ignorant to paint all of Americans with the same broad brush you speak against? Enjoy the Canal we built you, which is now the lifeblood of your entire country, ingrate. |

They are just cars guys, not space shuttles where only the US has them.
No Offense intended, but I like to mention a few examples... Some not in South America but goes to show the point.
Anybody been to Sao Apolo seen those big Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati, and Lamboghini dealerships? You'd be surprised. There are there because people are buying the damn cars. I am sure they are not discounted either. You'd be surprised to see how many BMW and Mercedes (Amoured ones at that) that roam the streets of some of worlds scareriest places. Example: Kinshasha, DR Congo. Amoured mercedes are in hot demand by war lords and militia commanders. Every military guy with any rank notable rank goes around in an Amoured S class. Apparently Mogadishu, Somalia also has its share of Amoured S-class. Go figure! These cost easily 3 to 4 times our misley E9Xs. Also hundreds of Toyota LandCruisers (Not cheap by any measure) in those war torn places. Land Cruisers don't break and they are popular because if you have a breakdown, it could easily cost you your life. While not in the same category but serves as good example, Tiny Cost Rica, in Central America too got BMW and Mercedes dealers, and the latest X5 is on sale there too in San Jose. It costs 2X US prices, and you see them on the roads there, someone is buying them. The rich in most of those countries including the starving ones are rich beyond your wildest imagination. Filthy rich is an appropriate term. Thats why some of the people are starving, because others grabbed too much for themselves. Congo has Diamonds, Gold etc. People own planes for heaven sakes in a country almost have the size of the US and with only 700 miles or real blacktop paved roads. Then they have private armies to guard their wealth, and a law onto themselves. Some insight. Rand Rovers are also a dime a dozen all over, and so are range rovers. Only out numbered by 1970s era vehicles. Talk about a real dichotomy
