G87 M2 vs Camaro SS 1LE - Head to Head Test/Video

Not sure if this is of much interest to all, but this is a head to head of the car that I just sold to make room for the G87 M2 (that was finally built this week).

On paper these two cars are within 2HP, within 50 lbs or so of each other, both M6, both have e-diffs, computer controlled suspension, etc. I.e. they are dynamic, if not price, direct competitors.

The M2 is, of course, a much better street car. The Camaro may be a better road circuit car (I'll find out once I track my G87). [hope someone does a head to head on road circuit soon]

Anyway - here is the video - you need to ignore a few inaccuracies reported on the figures.

Enjoy

A good comparison test for acceleration, but he needs to read the manual a bit on how to use launch control properly, as it is actually quite easy and consistent in activation and usage. Also needs to learn an open hand shifting technique to select the right gear properly if he keeps hitting 5th from 2nd.

I agree. Seeing this guys frustration with the M2 made me laugh because I don't experience any of the issues that he is exhibiting.
-"Why are you giving me launch control now, I don't need it now you stupid car" while doing 50mph+. "I hate this stupid screen"
He said 473/472, but BMW claims 453. Really shows what this guy knows. Complaining while winning.

Other than his complaining, it was actually a good race to see. The Camaro "might" have a better shifter with no-lift-shift but that M2 still pulled ahead for the most part.

Yes. Seeing some of these guys shifting, I cringe. Good thing he was not on a road course going 5-4 in a hurry.

As for launch control, I typically don’t bother. More fun to just drive it and modulate best you can. Sometimes you even beat launch control.

I’m not a drag racer, but that Tremec is sweet. I did drive a M6 G87 and I thought it was fine and easy to drive. A bit more rubbery than Tremec but very easy to drive.

I was impressed and pleasantly surprised how much the M2 pulled at the top end.

And even the launch with 305s on the 1LE and 285s on the G87 was impressive.

Of course we don’t know anything about the other driver.

It is promising. Can’t wait to get my M2.

You will not be disappointed. I noticed that some of these YouTubers really dislike the curved display and overall interior of the M2, but I can tell you that it's MUCH nicer than any Camaro or Mustang Interior by a long shot.

Oh, the G87 is so much better. It's just not close.

The SS 1LE is a better pure track for cost than the G87, but IMO the G87 beats it on everything else. Especially visiblity, I could never stand to drive Camaros due to the greenhouse design.

Oh, you don’t have to convince me. I love iDrive 8. I think the M2 interior is just perfect up front.

The SS 1LE is a great track car, but not a great street car.

I drove the M2 on track, but it was a BMW event. Traction fully on and paced. Hard to judge, but I think it will be great when it can run free 😎

P.S. The same guy/channel has the M2 vs a ZL1. I didn't post the link because it is rather pointless and was not very good.

I'm really glad the Gen6 Camaro 1L1/ZL1/etc existed. It forced a lot of folks from Ford to BMW to up their track capability in response.

But the compromises did not need to be that acute.

I think the M2 is the next generation of usable/capable/well-appointed sports coupe.

But it is always good when my upcoming new car wins a vs the my previous car. Validation is not needed, but it is sweet nonetheless

You are the owner of the G87 in that video? That is cool, if so.

Do you know what tires they had on?

He can't drive a manual. All his videos of manual cars, he tried to muscle the shifter into gear. He is such a noob, should stick with auto for racing video. Open hand and palm shifting is where it's at.
