Building an E-92 Race Car

Surely someone has performed these changes and can help me;

Modification:Changed M Sport wheel to Momo Mod 78 racing steering wheel
Problem:I used proper mounting kit, but DTC, ABS, SRS AIRBAG error codes are thrown.

Modification:Changed manual sport seats to Sparco EVO II/plus, with sliders
Problem:SRS AIRBAG and Seatbelt warning light error lights on dash.

Modification:changed OEM three point belts to Sparco 6-PT restraints.
Problem:Seat belt warning lights.

I contacted a code specialist who said he could reset the lights for seat belts and airbags. Hours later, he deduced that the passenger airbag and the steering wheel airbag are on the same circuit. When he cleared it, the error returned because the signal was still present from the passenger airbag.

He told me to remove that airbag and everything would be fine. We removed ALL THE INTERIOR AND ALL AIRBAGS, including the side curtains.

Needless to say the codes are still present! The car has been in limp mode as soon as it gets on the track, even scanning and clearing all error codes in the pits, they return as soon as I steer or hit brakes!

I have done a number of engine mods, header, Euro Intake, 330i 3 stage intake, and the VR race tune for the 328i with rev limit omit and cat delete.

Help me clear the codes and warning lights please!

The problem must be from removing the clock spring. Airbag codes would't cause this.

DSC needs to see the steering angel.

We re-installed the stock steering wheel (no airbag), and re-attached the wheel angle sensor to recover ABS and DTC.

Surely somebody has built an E-92 race car with aftermarket racing wheel and seats without throwing up all the dash warnings.

I've got two weeks to get things sorted before the next run at TMPS (Cayuga)

I'll ask my buddy who built our race car. We're running a Sparco Steering wheel as well and of course race belts and seat. All airbags have been removed as well. DTC and ABS work just fine and no limp-home mode.
We do have a warning light on the dash, but I think it's for TPMs and not the airbags.
BTW: We're running a 335.
You could try contacting Bimmerworld too as they race 328.

Hit up Alex@Alpine. He eliminated my airbag and seat belt lights after I installed my seats. He's a remote coder so can help you even in Canada.
Note: I still have functional airbags.

It was (is) my intention to create a thread for people to exchange build ideas, projects, problems and successes of converting your BMW to a race car.

I have taken thousands of pics during my ongoing build, and I hope to compile them into a logical format. Other than the complexities of the custom cage, we tried to do all of the work ourselves, so it is really a labour of love!

Built as a dedicated track car for 2014 season. BMW Performance Brembo Brake Kit, drilled and slotted rotors, SS lines, Performance Friction pads, BMW Performance short shifter, M race pedals, BMW Motorsport Performance suspension, shocks, struts, springs, bushings, front and rear sway bar, Carbon Fibre GTR race bonnet, Carbon Fibre CSL boot lid, Carbon Fibre front splitter, Carbon Fibre brake ducts, 55" Dual Plane rear wing, RAVEN Performance Chrome Alloy cage, MOMO 178 Alacantara steering wheel, Sparco Quik-release adapter, Sparco "Evo-2-Plus" race seats, Sparco 6 point harnesses, Simpson window nets and arm restraints, Ram Cold Air Intake, CSL rims, front 245-40, rear 265-35 R-18 Yokohama ADO8 R's, AIM Data logger, Go Pro.

I'm in the process of installing a full 3 stage 330i N-52 Dual Disa Valve intake manifold, with software, SS Race header, muffler and cat delete, resonator only.
BBS Race Wheels c/w centre lock with single hub conversion, Turner Caster Camber kit, and VR (Vivid Racing) N-52 flash tune.

Beautiful build . I see we have similar taste. My car started off for street, ended up turning show, and now I'm converting/prepping my car for a streetable track car for the 2014 track season (Auto X, Road Course,). Unless you have sponsors, it's impossible to have a balanced street/track/show car.

So far, I have a Cobb AP tuner, StopTech slotted rotors/performance pads/SS lines/fluid, Bilstein PSS coil overs, Evolution Racewerks charge pipe/intercooler w/custom shroud, SPEC stage 2+ clutch, aFe dual cone intake, Macht Schnell ceramic coated catless down pipes, Cusco front strut bar, Recaro Profi XL seats, BMW Performance short shift kit/spoiler, carbon fibre GTR race bonnet, HRE 840R 3 piece forged wheels, Michelin PSS tires, Go Pros, and I swap to the M Sport bumpers for the bigger ducts.

Plans before the 2014 Season
1. Getting a dedicated track setup. I'm aiming at Apex ARC8 and Hankook RS-3, just debating 17 or 18s. For the price I paid to get my HRE's refinished, I could have bought a setup with an extra set of rubber !

2. Will be deleting the fog lights for bigger ducts (for brakes and oil cooler).

3. Also looking into upgrading bushings and to Cobb's sway bars. Getting more roll than desired.

4. LSD

5. A pair of Schroth 4/6 point harness.

6. Been looking into roll bars and cages. From what I've read, the pillar/structure in our cars is strong and the money should go elsewhere. Could someone chime in on this?

I will post more info on the "bolt in" bar/cage, and I can tell you first hand the difference in handling is worth it. The rear base section straddles the strut tower stampings without impairing access to the shocks. It acts like a sub-frame stiffener and tower brace all in one. If you zoom in on the last pic taken of the trunk, you can see how neat the attachment is into the existing anchor points.

As for the rear end, I have been toiling with dropping in an M3 LSD, but it will attract performance improvement points and move me out of my Touring Class up to GT4. SO........I opted to replace the stock 323 ratio in the 328i MT6 coupe, for a 330i sedan, automatic trans, differential with 391 ratio. Turner Motorsport details this bolt on as " Changing the differential gearing is one of the best and most-effective upgrades you can make on any BMW " the 317 swap to 364 is also detailed on their site and costs less.

The diff change is also a good time to replace the transmission shift shaft seal, clutch and flywheel!

After "searching for gears" this season when the car is flexing and twisting, I've decided to add the solid engine and tranny mounts from UUC too.

Why not go with an aftermarket BBK that will withstand heat better than the OE calipers? Also when you say Motorsport suspension, are you referring to their Motorsport catalog or their BMW Performance (retail) suspension?

For the daily driver that sees occasional weekend DE's, I can see why you might want a soft suspension but clearly that's not the case for this car. You went all out to gut the car and remove creature comforts for (as you should for a race car) but then went with brakes/suspension better suited for a "street" car.

*edit* I see that you mentioned Touring class. Is that why you stuck with factory hardware?

I can tell you the suspension is "ultra hard" as my poor old back and testicles can attest. Also, by reducing so much vehicle weight, it has the effect of becoming even stiffer as there is less preload on the springs in a static state.

As for the brakes, I'm not sure what you are referring to about OEM calipers not handling heat as much as a BBK? I know that......I replaced the entire brake system, front, rear, master cylinder, flex hoses, fittings and lines.

The stock, solid, non drilled front rotors were 300mm x 24mm.
The BMW Performance rotors are fully floating, ventilated, cross drilled and slotted and are 340mm x 26mm, offering quite an upgrade to stock rotors.

The calipers are massive 6 pot Brembo units which have almost 80% more contact area than OEM, and the racing backing plates feature forced airflow cooling. All in all, I'm thrilled with the brakes and how responsive they are, fade resistant and very easy to modulate (even when heel and towing. The BMW aluminium race pedals really contribute to the brake feel and feedback.

Thank you for sharing, TomB. Maybe it's the pic (and no mention of it) but does touring class allow camber plates or any other means of getting more negative camber (esp. In front)? Hard to imagine how hard your endeavor would be without at least neg 3d up front.

When I said the stock calipers not withstanding heat, I was referring to your upgraded 6 pots. Those are still considered stock calipers (as opposed to aftermarket) since they came equipped on the 135i as standard. But the stock 6 pots overheating is well documented (search around 1addicts and you'll find a a 15 page thread going over it). Others have gone to extent of swapping backing plates, adding titanium shims and even rebuilding the calipers with upgraded pistons from RacingBrake or Stoptech.

In terms of the BMW Performance Suspension, I really wouldn't base my race car build off an Amazon.com review or description. I've driven an e92 with the same BMW PS and to be honest I actually found it to be very comfortable; a perfect street upgrade IMO. I'm actually considering swapping over to the PS once I wear out my stock M-sport shocks on my daily driver LOL.

End of day it's your car so if you like the upgrades that's all that matters. Keep us posted on your season, curious to see how your car stacks against the competition =)

Interesting set-up on the car. I have never heard of anybody using VR tune. I am guessing they are re-selling from one of the common tuners.

Also, please keep us updated how the brakes perform and what pads and rotors you are using. When I was doing research last year I found several reports of severe brake fading so I decided not to purchase it.

LSD would be an excellent addition. How come you can add the cage, seats and aero but no LSD?

You drive an e92 335i right? How did you fit the BMW performance brakes (which were designed for the f30 335i i believe) onto the e90? I am very interested in hearing if that installation is possible.

I always heard that the new BMW performance brakes didn't fit the e90.

Pretty sure it is a 328/325i, since he mentioned 330i intake. FYI, stock 335i brake actually works better than these. You are thinking the M-sport brakes for the F30. FYI, the front of those are direct bolt-ons, rear needs you to modify the wheel hub carrier.
