Clutch burn help!
Hey all, I'm having a little problem and tried searching around for some help on the matter but it seems that my problem isn't very commonly discussed. I have an N54 335i with the Cobb AP and an aftermarket intake, charge pipe and DV's.
I installed a 335is clutch and LUK flywheel about 3k miles ago and the whole process was perfect, both installation and break-in. Clutch was consistently tight and I have the CDV deleted. My problem started last weekend whenever I went WOT through 1-3 gears. First to second gear: flawless transition. Second to third gear, I had conflicting thoughts on whether or not to continue with WOT because the speed limit was 40mph and there is usually a copious amount of police patrolling the area, I was already going 60mph. What I proceeded to do when shifting into third gear was to keep my foot low enough on the clutch pedal as to not engage but for some reason, my right foot was all the way down on the gas and I redlined. Ouch, burn. I was confused about why I still gave it gas. I still don't know why I did that. Before the incident, if I were to shift extremely fast as if I were trying to achieve good times at a track, from 1-2 or 2-3 or even 3-4 gear (as I have the CDV deleted) the car would jerk. I have learned how to properly shift with the CDV deleted since then, btw, but now, when I shift like I used to, it's like i'm driving with the CDV intact. It's not jerky or tight anymore and I feel like I just shaved thousands of miles of life off my clutch. It smells like it's burning all the time, and I know what burning clutch smells like. May I remind you, I replaced the flywheel as well as my clutch. What I'm hoping it is, is that the clutch needs to readjust after normal driving conditions, as if I were breaking it in like it were new. Any thoughts? |

Did you bleed the clutch line properly so all the air is out of the line? If not then that could definitely be your problem.... Another possible issue is maybe your throw-out bearing is shot? Or maybe you got some grease/oil on the flywheel and/or clutch surface? If you burned the clutch real badly you could have "glazed" the surface of it which will cause problems just like what you're experiencing. |

I'm thinking I glazed it. (I did have a recent oil leak in the oil filter housing and it went everywhere, but I'm not sure if it would have reached the clutch surface.) I replaced the throw out bearing with the flywheel and clutch. Seeing as it happened after I rode the clutch, I'm thinking I glazed the clutch. I'll do some reading on that and see what I'm working with. Thank you for your help! |
