What’s the story with the sticky interior rubber?

Hi Folks

The rubber on the passenger door handle of my E90 has gone sticky…searching the forum I see this is a common issue..but does anyone know the cause? That I couldn’t figure out..

It’s only the handle on the one side now but trying determine if I can expect the other handles to go in the same way…

I’ve known other cars with similar problems, my Fiat Coupe for example had ruberised layer over the plastic trim that went tacky - but elbow grease and some choice solvent (isopropyl or methanol usually) fixed the Fiat trim…

I’ve the black interior with black rubber - can I remove the sticky layer with a solvent/cleaner?

Thanks in advance.

I had similar, bought a replacement handle off fleabay for a tenner there or there abouts. It's simply a matter of taking off the door card, removing the "plastic welded" original (cut or chisel it off) and then adding the replacement which will utilise a couple of screws/washers.

All in, taking time, start to finish with a brew along the way no more than 30 mins.

Don't bother trying to clean the original up, you'll never get it right. The replacement i got is just plastic but looks OEM.

A quick search - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/354739604...r=624075130621

Updated to show picture of mine (new cheap replacement)

+1 on jwilalex reply. I have a couple of e9x's in the family, and three of them have had this issue. I bought replacements from Amazon for about $30. The ones I purchased are no longer available, but I did find these:

You do need a drill to take off the old handle, but the whole job takes me less than 30 minutes and definitely is something most people can do themselves.

Thanks folks!

I’ll not bother trying to clean them in that case

For a nice added touch, paint the back in SEM color coat interior paint and it really adds a nice texture that feels closer to OEM/not so cheap.
