It is you whose memory is messed and someone actually thinks this too? The 1M revived the small M car market for BMW which led to the M2s until now. So take a look at the mirror and get your information correct before you tell someone that actually was at Woodstock what word stock was about.
+1 Whoever wrote that was not a car enthusiast in 2011. 1M was received as a legend from the start and used values barely ever dipped from MSRP, even when you could buy a first gen NSX or 993 for $30k.

We were not talking about the intrinsic goodness of the cars, but whether they could be made today and whether the market would want them.

I believe you mistake false demand, caused by a limited run, for popularity.

On topic, I think everything I said was true. 1-series in general got accolades but also plenty of critiques. Likewise some people loved the 1M but it was not beloved by all. It took a lot of flak for using the N54, for example.

The way I see it, the demand was not high enough to change BMW's mind so they would make it for another year. It wasn't even enough for it to get its own assembly line, it shared time with the X1.

Seem to me that BMW didn't see a future for either the 1 series in general or the 1M specifically. I conclude that the market wasn't big on these cars, and I doubt they'd do better today then they did then.

You also mistake my personal likes for my description of history. I already said I liked the 1 series. I was sad it was discontinued.

NO IT WAS NOT! …..and if you’re standing by that you weren’t around when the 1M debuted. That car was lambasted left and right at its debut……considered everything from a parts-bin special unfit for the ///M badge to a weak/lazy effort from BMW.

Yep! It tends to be like that with every prior car it seems. Nearly every single one had some kind of controversy; some more than others, but I digress.
