Flawed rationale. The E30 M3 didn't have fender grilles, which is a styling cue this new ///M2 is drawing from (…from its boxy design to its fenders to its lower rocker panels). The E36 didn't have fender grilles either. I think the G8X could've done without the fender treatment as well. The E46's grilles looked cheap while the F8X's grilles looked awesome; the E9X's were somewhere in between. In essence, this car is very much ///M!!!!

Agreed. Wish they just improved on the F8x design.

Can't beat black wheels when it comes to making a clean car look dirty. Brand new cars aren't spared either

My thinking is designers felt the fender treatment would've been overkill, rendering the side profile too busy. It already has a lot going on from the side.

I only now just noticed that the fuel flap isn't the weirdo round one that was on the F87 (not the F2x that had a fuel flap similar to this G87.)

The round fuel flap always looked off to me on the F87.

I would have liked to see an M badge on the side, I think it would make the hood look shorter. Maybe they'll put them on the M2c.

On this I disagree with you. I absolutely LOVE the round fuel flap on the F87.

Don't hurt your head overthinking it too much about it. The omitted bespoke M2 fenders had nothing to with a designers intentions but the result of bean counters cost-cutting.

Reusing the G42 fenders saves them a few bucks and in the process and so what if a few potential bitch about it. Tough. People will still buy the car regardless and they have still have their blinded fanboys who will spin this and justify it as an actual positive.

If they actually cared, they would opted for lightweight, exclusive M fenders made out of plastic or aluminum for M2.

We can agree to disagree. I reject the notion that everything an enthusiast doesn't like or every time a car doesn't have something, it's a cost-cutting issue.

I still don't like the headlights and taillights (same with the G42), but otherwise I dig the bodywork.

They didn't intentionally takeaway "what enthusiasts like." They found ways to bring down the overall cost of vehicle to make it, over what they are selling it for. It's not personal just business.

Call me crazy but I can see from a design standpoint why they decided to omit the fender vents to maintain the simple clean lines without any fuss. I personally think it's now more unique given every single car on the road now seems to have some sort of tacked on design element in that area.

Again, I don't think the lack of fender grilles has anything to do with cost-cutting. It was part of the design ethos IMHO.

Oh, you sweet summer child. Let me guess, they also choose to build a German car in Mexico because they like tacos, right?

I'm sure their shareholders just love that "ethos" omission for their pocketbook.

As you mentioned, let's just agree to disagree and move on.

You're pretty ridiculous. So much animus over a hole in the fender. Carry on!

Come back and tell me how clean the fender lines look when they add back 'a hole' on the M Performance or CS fender update, as incentive to upgrade from the older, base model.

For the record, I prefer the clean G42 fender line but I just find it humorous how folks are doing acrobats trying flip this move for BMW into something that it is not.
