Porsche&Merc and others are already in the hybrid DCT market. BMW just doesn't want to spend any R&D on it.

I meant BMW still uses the DCT, just not in M vehicles.

Wow. I didn't know that. Which models come with DCT?

My point is "No R&D on DCT from BMW." They use off-the-shelf DCT for FWD architecture from Mini.

To my knowledge MINIs and the BMW X1. Not sure if it’s used in other models (especially those not available in North America). I’d bet it’s used in some obscure model we don’t get, even more so if also based on a shared MINI platform.

Which version of G87? Many of us suspect next iterations will be auto only.

To my knowledge BMWs DCTs were always supplied by someone, namely Magna (still the supplier for current 2023 DCTs).

Porsche’s PDKs (acclaimed as best in business) are supplied by ZF.

So, manufacturers never spend too much R&D on these things as transmissions in general are always supplied by someone (Getrag, ZF, Magna, etc.)

Correct! even M2 CS will be auto only. They will offer manual TM for current gen M2 untill 2029 according to this blog.

No, Getrag DCT for E92 M3 was specifically developed for that vehicle and for future M cars to come. Ferrari simply followed BMW's development on the matter and used the same unit across all their models from that point on.

Albert Biermann weighing on that matter:

Great video with Albert here. It's a shame BMW couldn't continue to refine this DCT. If Ferrari is still using it, why couldn't BMW do the same... ?

Perhaps because the DCT would have required too many modifications to be compatible with the xDrive, the ZF8 is therefore the most cost-effective option.
Go back to 2007, when the DKG was designed, and try to think of an M car with all-wheel drive: that would have been laughable.

Let's not take away from a car manufacturers engineering...

Porsche's PDK is supplied by ZF, BUT "ZF is the manufacturer and they build it to Porsche's specs" meaning they built the PDK in conjunction and entirely based off of Porsche's specs. They're just the manufacturer, without Porsches engineering there'd be no PDK. With that being said, PDK isn't TRULY a ZF transmission as it isn't manufactured to ZF specifications.

Same with BMW and their E chassis DCT, made to their spec for their M cars.
