Chin up.

The M2 likely has even more speed within it. Our car lacked the optional lightweight carbon-fiber roof and bucket seats and bore the added weight of a sunroof. Plus, we posted our quick laps in the afternoon on slightly worn tires.

these lap times mean as close to nothing as possible while still retaining a value that is not zero.

I don't see a supra there, hope you aren't comparing times from 2 different event days with likely 2 different drivers.... also VIR is a bigass track, 1 second given the above issues doesn't mean anything

Agreed. I've read through a lot of them and they're poorly written. I like the ERay intro, "The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray is no stranger to VIR. During its gestation, the C8 development engineers thrashed it at America's Nürburgring on several occasions". How does several occasions at Nurburgring equal not being a stranger at VIR

If they're going to do these comparisons, they need to do them with either the same/equivalent options (tires, transmissions, etc.) or all of them with the most performance options and best tires available. I'm sure the M2 with the carbon fiber pkg and Cup 2Rs would've run a much better time.

I don't pay attention to these anymore. They don't even normalize for tire compound and options. The other two cars that ran faster lap times than the M2 in the same category we're using brand new DOT R compound tires and the M2 was on worn PS4S. Why do they even bother with publishing such "objective journalism"?

Clicks n money. Its YouTube 'bro' level journalism. Its not a review, with thought or depth of analysis at all. Its monetized print babble with a picture.

One thing is clear, BMW don't give a shit, ever. Every single year, they send cars with used crap tires. And most of the time, the cars don't have the actual performance options on them. Who brings a car to set lap records with a sunroof when a carbon fiber roof is available? They literally don't care whatsoever.

If this article showed better performance results and it put the M2 in a much better light, so many people would love the author and would agree 100%. I love how we are all G87-biased

It's an M2 forum, of course everyone is biased. That doesn't take away the fact that they used the worst spec top heavy M2 and then tracked it on worn tires. Can't blame C&D, they get what they're given. The blame goes squarely to BMW.

I don't think the sunroof would have made much of a difference to be honest.

Should BMW care about what an american publication is saying about their cars? I ask that in all seriousness. Not sure if they have German car magazines and things over there that they are more focused on impressing. Or maybe the obsession with track times, zero to 60 and stuff is an American thing.

Absolutely, they should care. NA is M's biggest market and people around the world read and watch our reviews too.

At the end of the day, it’s still a Toyota.

I can't say I'm not a bit disappointed. The G87 was 2.1s slower than the car I just traded in for the M2 - 2018 Camaro SS 1LE. Yes, different day, different driver - but that is a reference point.

I have to say, though, that driver seemed to be on a parade lap in the M2. And the PS4S Star rated are good tires - the Tyre Reviews guy shows that tire as being competitive with GYSC3 that was on the Camaro.

Oh well - I'm a month away from being able to set up my own lap times to see what it is at.

I think you read that incorrectly.

They are calling VIR the Nurburgring of America.

Yup, look at the Dark Horse….Ford protects that car and brings it for reviews on full blown race tires…ALWAYS.
Whoever at BMW who approved this M2 for Lightning Lap let the brand down.

C&D also had tire issues with the M3 this year….complete fail and now it’s in the record books.
