If you think the M2 needs xDrive you're better off with a 116d and a walker. Cut that out and let at least one car remain in the lineup that actually represents what BMW used to be

Can't get past the gauges (or lack thereof). One suggestion to BMW - give the option for the previous G8x cluster and allow the user to pick a more traditional speedo / tach layout. Unfortunately, they've probably painted themselves into a corner with the new iDrive and this flexibility just isn't possible.

And you think the 2023 M2 will actually represent what BMW used to be? Let me guess, now having a manual transmission and RWD = what BMW used to be? Have we all become numb to all the other things that changed, like hydraulic vs. electric steering, naturally aspirated vs. turbo, light vs. heavy weight, all the electronics & driving nannies etc.

AWD & Auto are just two more things that most of us will be okay with when the next gen is about to come out as a hybrid. We'll be saying please leave it ICE only so it represents what BMW used to be

Soon you'll be asking for one that has a steering wheel and not self driving only, meanwhile the majority will be boasting how their self driving EV m3 gets around the ring faster than any human driver ever could.

🤣🤣🤣 116d and walker! …too much!

Spot on with at least few remaining that don't chase 0 - 60 number but purity and fun of driving!

For sure, do you think anyone who has a supercar now know how fast it goes around the ring? Maybe 0.5% at best.
It's a useless statistic that helps boost price.

Why is bmw so popular?
IMO it's the best combination of everyday comfort with performance, it gives the driver feeling of Speed and at the same time comfort when driving long distance. And for those who want to do track days, it can certainly give run for the money to heavily modified cars. And then drive home without being towed.

So autonomous driving and ev have its advantages but for those who actually enjoy driving, "used to be" concept still lives!

And to give you another perspective, classic car prices sky rocketed when more EV's started to sell.

The cameraman really needs to take a class or something, his video work was making me motion sick.

At first I didn't realize the screens were covered and thought they were surrounded by the dash which looked nice vs. the current cars where they look like billboards mounted to the dash.

Law of diminishing returns though. The F87 will win every beauty contest, and with less money in mods than the difference in price to a G87 (probably) it'd have the same performance with enough left over for a nice set of wheels.

But sure, if outright speed is your thing, then the TT cars are going to win that particular battle.

BMW can always sell one without the xDrive like they do now. I think of it like having the best of both worlds (if you offer both) instead of limiting it. I'm not saying don't offer a manual, but a BMW M car being built in Mexico & having more technological assistance & parts than ever before is not what BMW used to be anyways.

I wish I could get the walker joke but it's a bit confusing for me. Why would I want a walker when my hypothetical version would be faster than yours in every measurable category? (Basing this off the fact that the xDrive M3 beats the RWD in every track/test I've seen). That's the set up I would have the most fun in & be the fastest in as well.

xDrive is a make or break for me. The majority of my driving is in the straight line & occasional canyon driving. The extra weight of it wouldn't bother me, nor would the extra price.

For me the xDrive adds more purity and fun over any other configuration. To each their own

Purity for me can mean two things in different regards. First, performance. Grip, handling, confidence… things that resemble speed & performance. That's what being a pure sports car means to me (fun as well).

Then the flip side goes back to a car like the E9x M3. Hydraulic steering, N/A high revving engine, analog gauges, etc. Things that resemble what a BMW used to be. Both are fun & pure in different ways for me.

Given the power and performance numbers of modern cars, I think we need xdrive for confident driving.

In the past, these cars were not as powerful as today, and the Xdrive was an overkill. But today it makes sense to utilize all the power in a confident manner.

EXACTLY! There are plenty of other XDrive Bimmers. X1, X2, X3, X5, X7, M3 Competition, M4 Competition, M5 Competition. Or buy an Audi.

Leave just ONE for those of us who appreciate just how good the old "Ultimate Driving Machine " formula used to be!

Certainly some fair points. I have yet to get over BMW's EPS steering.

But I agree with the others that M2 should remain as the final embodiment of BMW's original brand ethos. The simplicity and back-to-basics approach of the 1/2-series is what many of us love about it. Unfortunately it doesn't seem the G87 will be a particularly light or compact car.
