AMS Exhaust fits N55 & XDrive

First off I want to thank **********s.com, Eddie************.com and AMS for helping me out. I wanted an exhaust for me N55 E90 Xdrive, but there didnt seem to be many options for the N55. I confirmed the flange for the downpipe is the same from the N54 as most of you may know. AMS has never test fit their exhaust on an N55 or an XDrive vehicle so they couldnt guarantee fitment. After talking with **********s and AMS, I decided to order the exhaust and give it a shot, why not?

The AMS exhaust is a very nice quality piece, and the welds are amazing. Fitment was not 100% on my vehicle, but nothing to major. The flange that bolts to the downpipe seems to sit at a slightly more upward angle then it does on the N54 from what I have seen so the AMS flange did not fit on it smoothly at first. I had to drill out the 4 holes to the next size up, not a big deal, then the flange slipped right on. The pipes cleared the XDrive Tcase without a problem at all. Everything else fit perfectly the way it should. Only other issue I ran into is the 1st V Band clamp closest to the downpipe is touching the heatshield/underbody of the vehicle. I think this is due to the downpipe flange being at a slightly different angle. Ive driven it about 10 miles so far and havent heard any rattles from it however.

The AMS exhaust will fit XDrive N54 and N55 E90 vehicles for any of those guys wondering, you now have another option. AMS has always advertised it to fit RWD only.

The exhaust is slightly louder, I was actually thinking it was going to be much louder but its not. Im going to give it hell for a few days and see if it "breaks in" at all.

Here are a bunch of pics I took while I was installing it.

Plenty of clearance past the trans/tcase/mount. This is the clamp that is hitting the shield though.

I took one quick before I left my shop tonight with my GoPro cam. For some reason the file got corrupted. I will take another tommorow. Unless I feel like going back out tonight, which I just may do.

I found that playing with the rotation of the pipes will help get you clearance on that first v band. I did this and it got me about a quarter of an inch clearance.

The issue is the 4 bolt flange that bolts to the DP is a fixed piece and thats what is hitting @ the vband side of that pipe. I can try what you said and clock the pipe that is attached to it, it may help force it off of the heat shield but I doubt it. Looks like the 4 bolt flange pipe just needs to be welded at a slightly different angle.

I felt the same way as you. I thought it should have been angled down a few more degrees before welding but after rotating all of the pipes until they were in harmony it fixed the issue. Hope it works for you.

Thank you very much for the review! It was nice to see it fits. I would recommend rotating some of the midpipes to gain added clearance as it should work.

I am curious to the actual size of the hole that you drilled the y pipe flange open to?

Im going to attempt to rotate it tonight. I forget the drill bit size but it was one size up from the origianl hole. The flange wouldn't slide over the do straight because it hit the floor board so i kind of had to slide it on at an angle which is why i opened the holes up. Will this exhaust get loser after a few miles? I don't know if its me or not but it seems like its getting louder

I'm glad that everything worked out and definitely props to you for taking the chance and getting this information out for the community! Post up some sound clips of the AMS exhaust system when you get the chance and I'm sure that it sounds beastly!

It will get a little louder over time but it should be totally broken in after about four weeks.

Not a problem. I was a little nervous that it wouldnt fit, but I knew worst case if it didnt, I really shouldnt have a problem selling it if need be.

It seems to have gotten alittle louder over the past few days. Its definitely not as loud as the vids you guys have on your website. This has to be because of on the N54 you are removing the secondary cats. On the N55 the both cats are built into the downpipe and the only that is getting removed is the resonators.

I should have videos this weekend

Dave,

Thank you for taking the time to investigate this fitment question. The guys over at AMS know how to make great products and I trust guys that produce 1000+ whp monsters all day long!

It looks pretty tight under there, but I'm really surprised how you cleared the T-case without a problem. Thank you so much for investigating this for us!

If you have any other products you're interested, you know who to call!
