Same song plays at start up on my USB or Nav HDD

So I have this weird issue and i'm hoping to see if anyone as seen it. I have a 2015 335i with the HK sound system and Nav.

When I start my car up, the same song will be playing at the same time.

Now I don't mean the same song where I last left off, I'm stating the same song will be playing everyday.

Every time I start my car, the one song will be playing again even if I changed artist and songs from my last drive.

Its like I'm living in Groundhogs day.

Everyday i'm getting "Drunk on a plane" with Dirks Bentley about 3/4 the way into the song.

The prior song was worse and I deleted it and though I fixed the issue but it keeps coming back.

This is happening with USB and also Media Library.

This might have started around a month ago as it was working normal before.

Has anyone heard of this????? I would really like a solution

Thank you!!

Groundhog's Day? I'm thinking Christine.

Is the song listed as one of your favorites? That's the only thing I can think of.

The car always plays the 1st song alphabetically from my music library on start up from my iphone when connected via bluetooth. It is very annoying.

I wish there was a way to resume playing what was played before I shut the car off.

If you have Apple Music, anything that is saved or downloaded in your music library will automatically play first regardless, I deleted the song and it no longer happens, I just stream music now from Apple Music, (also if you switch to HQ music it sounds even better)

I have 1600 + songs in my library. The last song played when I shut the car off is always the first song playing when I startup the car. What I have done that most are not willing, is installed all my songs on the hard drive. Since you have Nav, you are able to install your songs instead of using bluetooth or having your iphone hooked up constantly. For my purposes, this is the greatest method of playing my library. I have access to 20GB of disk space and it is fast and reliable. Never had a problem. Once you learn how to import your songs using a USB flashdrive, it is very easy from then on. If you need help, let me know. By the way, it takes less than 12 minutes to install 1600 + songs to the hard drive.

What I've done, on my iPhone, setup an automation with the Shortcuts app that triggers when CarPlay connects, and it pauses whatever song is playing over Bluetooth.

This may not pertain to you, but it's an option that's worked well for me.

So this sort off happens to me. But I think it's normal.

I believe our cars automatically play the first song in your library everytime. But for me, I notice this is especially true when your music app is closed out on my iPhone.

When the music app is open on my iPhone it will usually pick up right at whatever song is playing on the app.

Its not the first song in my library.... that's not the issues and its also not with a connected phone. I've seen that in other cars.

Its playing the songs store on a USB drive or the media library hard drive in the car.

Its plays from the middle of the same song every time I start the car.

If i'm listening to a totally different playlist or band it reverts back to the same song about part way though on start up.

:-)

Ever startup, I re-listen to the same song at the same section played. Everyday...

This is how I play my music. I use the nav HDD. When I park my car listening to anything else, at start-up it plays the same country song about part way through.

I've noticed this too on Bluetooth. What I can tell is anytime you watch a video it closes your music app and resets to the first song in the library.

What type of files have you installed on the hard drive mp3, mp4 or FLAC or some
other format?

If I left off at song 1260 when I shutoff the car, upon startup that's the song that
starts playing assuming it wasn't finished upon shutdown. Mine never plays the same
song on startup because I use random sort. Do you have the random block checked in setup?

It's also possible that my version of idrive is different than yours which could be causing
the song discrepancy with your version.

For example. If I start my car, song 1122 plays on the HDD or USB at 1:04 and then I change playlists or albums and listen for my drive. I then get to work and shut the car off for example on song 2301 or some other album playing.

When I start the car song 1122 starts playing at 1:04 again.

Its like the car forgot it played anything and it just resumes from some point in the past.

Thinking its a head unit issue or battery...

its still going on.

still under CPO for about 4 more months but I don't think electronics are covered.

Thanks for the help.

Hey, I've managed to fix this, but it always eventually returns (usually after about 2 months). Hope this helps someone.

My car is a F31 330d. I am in the UK. It has the larger screen (not sure which iDrive that is?).
I used to have a F10 M5 with the exact same problem and the same fix (temporarily) worked on that too.

CAUSE
I believe the underlying cause may be either a software bug or most likely a failing hard disk in the idrive unit, because I've owned multiple cars with the small screen (which use an SD card for memory) and never had this issue with them (but same USB stick and same music collection).

WARNING
DO NOT attempt this process on a car with the small display, as I'm fairly sure that the key step of using the volume button to reset doesn't work (at least it has no effect on my wife's car with the little display).

SYMPTOMS
As well as it becoming 'fixated' on a particular part of a particular song each time you start the car, I've noted some other symptoms on my car:
1. Sat nav won't start up sometimes - it will just say it's loading forever
2. It'll forget my shortcut buttons settings (the 1 to 8 numbers on the idrive unit)
3. Sometimes it won't load any driver profiles
4. The latest I've experienced (once only) was it randomly losing all bluetooth phones from the list

SOLUTION
The solution (at least for a decent period) is:
1. Turn the car off. Then without your foot on the brake, press start/stop engine button. You should see the check engine light on the dash.
2. Go to iDrive's top menu, then Settings>Profiles.
3. Export your current profile to USB.
4. Now shift the knob to the right and scroll to the bottom of the menu there. Clear all personal data.

This will now cause iDrive to attempt to clear EVERYTHING. In the case of my car, it meant the radio switched to FM, the HUD position was reset, etc.
After about 2 mins, you should see some kind of feedback. In my case, it always says it couldn't clear sat nav data for some reason.

Now the moment I panicked first time - nothing you do with the idrive buttons, the car's ignition or radio buttons will get you off this screen. You have to press and hold the volume button for what feels like an eternity (but is probably about 20 seconds) when the screen will turn off and iDrive will reset. You should see a BMW splash screen and then idrive loads up.

Now go back to the profiles menu and import your previously exported profile. Check things like radio shortcut buttons now work. One thing which for some reason is always lost is bluetooth devices - you'll need to re-pair these.

Now if you use your USB for music, go to the external device menu then USB. If the icons above/below the magnifying glass are greyed out, this means the car is still reading your music and cataloguing it. My advice is to remain until this is complete - I've found it won't always complete reliably the next time you get in the car. So let it do its thing - I've known this to take 20-30mins for my entire collection of around 40Gb of music.

Once that's complete, you should find the problem is sorted. But like I said earlier, it always eventually reappears in my experience. In which case, rinse and repeat.

OTHER NOTES
Other things I've tried (hoping for a more permanent fix):
1. Latest update was applied to iDrive by an independent specialist. Didn't change a thing. Cost me £100. Yaaaay.
2. Different USB stick.
3. Clearing the memory of USB sticks (the car caches the last 4, so if you insert 4 different ones, it'll clear the memory). Made no difference.
4. Different USB file systems. Made no difference.
5. Doing a full sector-by-sector file system check of USB stick, repairing any damaged sectors.
6. Using my other key. Didn't sort it.
7. Using the volume button to reset. Didn't work (except after the data clearing).
8. Checked all modules of the car using BMW ISTA. None found affecting any sat nav, idrive, etc modules.

Is the song listed as one of your favorites? That's the only thing I can think of.
