Garden advice
Hi Guys,
been in my house 2 years this weekend, and the garden is a bit of a shit hole. Loads of excuses to why really but not I'm fed up with it. I really want somewhere nice to spend summer evenings this year so am after advice really. i don't want anything fancy just a nice lawn and some plants. I currently have patchy grass from where I did a crap job of seeding it. Can I just lay turf down over the top or do I need some sort of work doing before I lay turf down? Kind regards

I grew a real nice lawn from nothing this year. The ground was really shite but I just put down the cheapest B&Q seed and it grew beautiful. I then used too much evergreen complete and burnt it in patches .
To be fair though it is almost cheaper to buy turf. You should put down topsoil and roller it but if the grass has grown in your current soil just stick it down. You can just put it over the current grass. Whats the worst that can happen? It will grow through and make your lawn thicker |

Cut the lawn very short then overseed with a decent lawn seed.
What area have you got to cover?

Some potential issues with the dog though if it is in the garden. My Labrador thought it great fun once he found the turf lifted up in nice big rolls, after a week or ten days the grass knitted in and solved that issue. Other issue is if the dog pees on it, seems to burn the turf much more than a seeded mature lawn, mine is now sooooo patchy.

Yeah dog piss is a nightmare-I've heard it's bitches piss that burns it up but can't confirm, however, I saw some proper 'anti dog piss' stuff in homebase the other day, I presume you just sprinkle it over.
I'm in the same boat as OP, shite patchy lawn but getting there with the seed and plenty of watering. New shed, bit of decking and job done. |

It is the bitches wee that does it. Dog piss can neutralise it. But I only have a bitch.

When I grew up with labs, the bitch pee'd and then the dog would pee over the same spot and had no patches. Big-boy has left us now and the bitches pee levels stains.

Our garden lawn is falling apart, just can't seem to get it to grow and it's very boggy and patchy and the cat craps all over it. We're getting fake grass in soon to save on maintenance. When you see the stuff you can buy these days, it's VERY impressive.

It's our cat, I'm not going to shoot it
Even without the cat, we've never been able to do anything decent with our lawn. The ground below is just a mess and was almost a boggy marsh when I moved in. Spent years trying to get it to do something decent but have finally given up. How's that for a piece of grass?

I have planted Dichondra repens or kidney grass, in my garden for a year and a half now. Because mowing is not essential with this type of grass i have chosen this type. It grows beautifully, and my kid loves it. Plant this kind of grass and you will never look back. Trust me. I paid 50 euros in seeds and that was it.
If dichondra is sown in a sunny condition, with medium traffic, it is a ground hugging, tight cover. In shadier conditions with less traffic it may reach 15cm. All of my friends who saw the outcome of this, they all want to remove their "normal" turf and replace it with Dichondra. Np hassles and it keeps your graden green all year round. |

Spandelli what the hell MAN> this isnt cyprus, I think where I live we got 4.7 hours of sun this year so far. Why did you display the crappiest picture of artificial lawn you could find? Would it be possible to see some pics of your lawn? as it does sound nice.
Desmondo stuff is that? and Gizze your lawn looks very nice. Im needing to find a solution for our front lawn. Have some chaps coming to see it soon to suggest and give estimates. |

We should be putting ours down in the next 2-3 weeks.
