This was due to the S55 having two turbos and therefor two banks of exhaust that were of unequal length. This resulted in the exhaust pulses traveling the length of the exhaust and exiting the tailpipes at uneven intervals. That all changed with the S58, it still has two turbos with two exhaust banks but they are now of equal length. Check out some pics of the G80/2 undercarriage and you'll see one of the exhaust pipes does an odd U shaped bend around the center of the chassis, that's to add extra length to one exhaust bank to make it equal with the other which makes all the difference. The S58 sounds way better than the S55.
I'll have to find the video but I'm pretty sure one of the guys at Active Autowerke was saying that the pipes actually aren't equal length by some measure (apparently this differs by transmission as well). It was featured on The Daily Driven's channel when he got his custom midpipe from them.

Link here (start at 2:29ish for the bit with AA):

Sound clips of it are at like 12 minutes. This is the setup I want for my G87

I know that they say they "tried to make them" equal length, I'm just pointing out that AA seems to think they've failed at doing so.

My first reply to you was just as you edited your original post and added the video. The video was interesting, but I have some questions about it which I was hoping they'd answer in the video, but they didn't. I wanted to know what the difference was in the length that they measured. The reason is BMW might have made it equal length in regard to the exhaust gasses, but the physical pipes are slightly offset due to the firing order. I don't know enough to say for sure, just a thought. I didn't like the way the car sounded in the shop when they were revving it, sounded screeching to me. It did however sound epic on the drive-bys.

Yeah, I checked the Bimmer Invasion channel where they talked about the same thing in the catted downpipes video but they were vague (intentionally?) on the actual length discrepancy. Totally agree that it sounds like ass in a relatively enclosed environment though

Getting pretty far off topic, but as an engineer it pains me to see them equalize the length by putting a bunch of wiggly bends in the pipe to add length.

I thought something similar, seems like excessive weight for something that could be solved with better engineering.

This is what I have on my list of mods lol. I just want the midpipe to go with downpipes. I think the full exhaust and downpipes might be raspy

I just want a fart free exhaust system. So whoever makes that, I'll be knocking on their door.

You can rule ZB out or not by knowing one fact. The color doesn't always look this way. People that have seen it in person all say ZB looks washed out and very light in direct sunlight. The color changes depending on the lighting conditions. Only in the shade or when it's overcast does the blue come out. You can see in that pic above it looks overcast.

The M240's TNM is the same...but does look good no matter what the conditions.

There's a ton of partial shade where I live so I'm even more stoked. Loved it at the 50th anniversary and forgot why until I remembered it was the color it shows in the shade.

Tnm is one of my favorite bmw colors. But would struggle to get it on an m2 and it blend in with the m240i.

Agree 100%. First, I dont want an M240 and M2, both in TNM, sitting in my driveway. Second, my wife would not be happy that my car came second and same and chose the same color as hers (maybe that is actually first, in case she reads this).

The color looks absolutely gorgeous in this post. But I can find plenty of other photos where I don't like it at all. It's like Seinfeld's girlfriend who's a "two-face."

Need to see ZB in person before I finalize my order because my brain is going to break.

This thread should quickly put to rest any of your doubts. What ZB really looks like via a DSLR that were taken by Caerus.
