So my car is already warning me I have need to get my brake pads replaced. I have 16K miles on the car but I do drive her pretty hard. Is this expected?

The car will tell you at x mileage (IIRC 3500 miles to go) that pads need changed. It will stay there literally forever. Either inspect the pads and decide or wait for the sensor to trigger.

My current car at 33000 miles told me that the front brake pads needed replacing. BMW wanted $1700 for front pads and rotors.
I took it to Euro Fix and they inspected and told me the pads still had 10mm on them, and based on the amount of miles on the car, they'd be good for another 15000 miles or so...

It ended up costing me $145 to have the sensor replaced so that they could reset the message on the screen.

Hopefully the brakes will be good until I sell the car (and after I do!) when the new one eventually comes in.

Everybody drives differently so folks mileage to that warning will vary.
Pull a wheel on front/rear and inspect/measure the pads thickness.

BMW/MINI brake pads are very soft. I had to change them on my MINI GP after only 9,000 miles. If you want longer lasting pads you'll probably need to go 3rd party.

So thinking from a DIY mindset, we’ll also have to replace a sensor instead of just the pads in order to clear the pop up? Wtf??

Similar to oil changes in iDrive 8, still can’t figure out how the hell to reset the oil life which is different from iD7

I would have it inspected, probably a sensor or calibration issue. They are not perfect systems. With out aggressive Ring taxi use not normal for 16K.

The pads are pretty aggressive, but that's how you get incredible stopping power. With a spirited car, your average speed is probably higher. You are braking more often and from higher speeds. Plus, the brakes are applied to help rotate the car in a turn, or by the stability control system.

On a related note my 2018 MINI JCW flagged a brake wear warning with around 15K miles on the car. I didn't flog the car just drove it 60 miles a day for my (mostly) freeway work commute.

Rear pads, well, one, on the driver's side worn to the sensor. Had the rear pads and rotors and sensors replaced.

After I noticed the stability control system activating the left rear brake during a sweeping right hand turn I took almost every morning on my work commute.

Was not taking the turn at any real high speed, but slowed down and still could feel the brake being applied. And noticed the stability control active symbol flashing on the dash. (Hard to see as the spoke of the wheel hides it during the turn.)

On a hunch had the car back in to the MINI dealer for a brake fluid flush/bleed. Even though the car 1 year old and with just 15K miles this cured the over active stability control system.

Might add with my 2024 230i xDrive (with around 1500 miles on the car) the stability control system seems very well behaved but I am noticing when slowing down -- on dry pavement too -- as the car's speed drops it feels like the ABS system is applying the brakes but not exactly like the ABS system would do this. The brake application is irregular/pseudo-random. I don't feel anything through the pedal but I do feel the car slow with mild brief increases in braking.

Had this behavior with my 2020 M-B cargo van. A brake fluid flush/bleed cured the van of this behavior.

So I believe I'll book the car in for a brake fluid flush/bleed to nip this behavior in the bud...

Your brake pad sensor is malfunctioning or your car has been going to the track without telling you
