Yep. Uninspiring.

I don't like it at all. Maybe the color, maybe not.

Previous M2 CS was a much better looking car.
I don't see how BMW had a win-win situation in any of this to be honest. On one hand, if they do not change the design of the M2, then everyone would simply hold onto their F87 and not buy the G72. On the other hand, they make the new G87 radically different with a new slate and limitless possibilities for M performance parts etc. and the public hate it and gawks at its differences. In my eyes, this is a step forward. You must change the slate to proceed, and that's exactly what they did. The F87 rear is hideous in my opinion. It looks like a soda can that you just stepped on and crunched. Previous F87 also had complaints of lack of carbon roof, buckets, etc., and now we have all of this. People complaining about lack of colors, "upgraded" quality, etc, would complain if this price point was $70-80k and still wouldn't buy. All of you want a price point $60-62k. What do you expect? Lol. You all want high quality materials, g8x quality, 6MT, paint to sample, light weight, and new design for $60k.

I'd say the G87 is the king of crushed soda cans given that the rear looks like it just came out of a compactor

Their is no excuse for poor design.

As a designer myself you can do anything if it's a new platform and they wasted it, the design direction was a bad call.

I bet if you where in the studio they had probably 30 designs or more that blew this one away but sometimes the guy that makes the call to pick the theme either makes the wrong call or the sketch is so cheated it looses its luster when converted to 3D and real world proportions. And then it's to late to turn back.

It's ok if it's ugly, they will
Make a new one at some point and I don't have to buy this. And when they finally get their shit together and create beautiful cars again I'll jump back in the drivers seat.

But as far as this concoction goes I'm taking a vacation from my BMW fanboy ways .

As history shows yes they sold edsels and Aztecs but it was not a huge hit and where considered some of the worst designs in history, These will sell…. but for mass market appeal, not sure ……. Their will always be a few that can get past it or think it's good looking but you know you hit a home
Run when everyone on the board can pretty much all agree it's a gorgeous car. This not so much.

I pleasant design with good proportions has no reason to be more expensive to build than an ugly design.

This new pic shows something I hadn't noticed before. It appears that the hood arches high on the sides, then scoops down before flowing upward into a power bulge. It looks pretty awesome.

Ultimately I think we are in the midst of a design ethos change in car design, creased and "fussy" designs of the mid/late 2010's are being replaces by angular designs with simpler and straighter lines.

I see a lot of parallels between the new range rover and the G87 in these overall design changes. I would bet the g87 will age quite well since it's on the forefront of this wave. But we will see...

The G42 might be the best looking of BMW's current lineup.

The G87's bumpers, headlights, and grill appear proportionally odd compared to the G42, imho.

Yeah, people are going to complain and sometimes it's a bit much. However, BMW was able to successfully transition elements from previous designs into new models for decades. Further, I think the point you made that BMW had to make a radical design change because people would just hold on to their F87s is nonsensical. They had a big winner in the F87 and now had a lot of desirable hand-me-down parts/engineering from the G8X. Plus, consumers want new toys with warranties and this car will likely easily outperform the F87. I'd strongly argue they were in a win-win situation. All they had to do was build off the previous car's success and try to improve its shortcomings in design and performance.

A more evolutionary approach given the radical new G8X would have made a lot of BMW enthusiasts very happy. We will see if this car proves to be a success. Personally, I don't think it's the slam dunk a lot of bimmerposters claim ("People will buy it no matter what!"). Compared to the controversial G80, I think it will be a lot harder for potential buyers to swallow a mixed design when you don't have the utility of four doors, xDrive, manual/sedan, etc. This is a RWD performance coupe with an even more compromised backseat than the previous generation. We will see.

I would disagree
For real. At least this rear is cohesive. I'm obviously biased but I can't see myself parting with my F87 for this. I will still wait to see it in black before the final call. The only reason I'm even considering trading up is because I didn't build mine and it's dct.
