Currently posting this from my car in a complete panic.

I was installing all my carbon m performance goodies today, everything went very smoothly. Last thing to do was switch over the gear lever to the M Performance one.

After installing it, I get an error. "P button not functioning"

I can't go into any gear, can't do anything. I reinstalled the original one, same issue.

Brand new car and I can't move it out of my driveway.

Can anyone help?

check to see if there's a fuse that controls the gear selector and make sure it's not blown. that's really the only thing I can think of if the old one doesn't work either.

Yes, that sounds like a good first move. Wish I could help. Hope Ron finds a simple and easy fix.

The fuse that controls the shifter I'm hoping is F28, but I can't find it. The fuses in the trunk aren't the right ones, although I'm completely confused by this fuse map.

Tried disconnecting the battery as per BMW Roadside, no dice. They're sending a flatbed and it's going back to the dealer.

I'm so beyond upset. I hope it's something super simple.

there's a fusebox under the glovebox that might be your answer. look under the glovebox and there should be 2 large plastic flathead "screws." get a flathead and turn them a quarter turn and it should release, then pull down the cover. be careful as the light plug will still be attached so just unplug it and remove the cover. you will find the fusebox to the right.

Did you reseat the ribbon cable correctly? If it's not seated and locked in right then it wouldn't read it correctly. Worst case it got damaged.

I tried so many times. I'm standing in my driveway watching my blue baby go onto a flatbed headed back to the dealer as I leave this comment.

When I find out what happened, I'll report back so you guys have something to reference if anyone else attempts to install the Carbon MP gear lever.

Hi,

I have the same problem. After installing carbon lever, an error. "P button not functioning" was displayed. Error appears even after going back to previous lever.

Service told me that they need to replace internal console because it stopped working. I didin't think anyone alse will have the same problem.

My new part should be in service in two weeks but I will tel them about your situation to make sure that they will not damage next console.

I will let you know if they will find solution.

Are they covering it under warranty? Really don't feel like shelling out $500 for a new assembly because an OEM BMW part fried it.

Yes, it's covered under warranty.

Did the dealer do the install though?

OP did the install himself so it will be interesting if the dealer gives him issues because of that. They could simply say “we wont cover it under warranty because you broke something installing the part yourself.”

Just don't mention that you tried installing the part.

Just wanted to update you guys. The dealer just called.

They knew I changed the shifter because the MP knob wasn't on my window sticker. No hiding that.

She tried telling me it wasn't covered under warranty because I installed it. I asked her why shop.bmwusa.com sells these parts and provides PDFs of installation instructions if the customer installing these components voids the warranty. She has no answer because it makes no sense. It was one screw and one cable.

I didn't want to argue with her, but so far it's $199 just to diagnose the car. I'm not happy.

I'm not seeing installation instructions on the bmwusa site. Do you have a link? I'm just curious what's involved for this

Did you disconnect the battery before installing? I wonder if something shorted out in the process

Did you swap back to the orginal shifter before sending to BWM?

No, I probably should have, but I want the MP one and I want it to work. If they fixed it with the original one I'd still need to install this one and break it again.
