Safe Daily Driver Whp/Tq goals?
What are your end all be all goals as mentioned in the title?
After driving with the BPC Stage 1 for 4000 miles, I realize that it isn't enough. I think I might have lofty goals, but 425whp/600lbft is my next goal. Any idea where the max will be? Is it going to be transimission or engine limits? Love to read your thoughts.... |

Lol, the more you mod the more likely it won't be a daily driver. The more power the more stuff breaks. Basically if you like your reliability now stay with it! I've modded a lot of cars and suffer from the disease, but I know its very easy to go one mod to far without realizing and you've gone from daily driver to one that never leaves town/garage queen.
My opinion the DP/SCR Gut/ETC give you very little additional power (10whp ish). But don't trade much in reliability. IF you want 425WHP, its not going to be a low maintenance daily driver with a 335d (other cars sure). A Stage II Car with all the deletes is running about 310WHP (stage 1 is about 300WHP). To hit your target of 425WHP means generating another 115 WHP, which means a ton of upgrades (BPC Stage 4). I'm not sure if anyone at that level is a daily driver, id certainly have a good relationship with the counter person at hertz or a 2nd car if you do this. I'm not really certain if there are even 20 335's at that power level out there. So you'll definitly be at the limits of what anyone can do with this car and it will be more of a rolling experiment as to what breaks next ;-) Also this exceeds the max power handling of the drive train so the transmission and probably diff will have a short life without upgrades. Plus you'll be running meth, which needs constant attention and the pumps fail frequently. You won't be loaning this car to a girl friend, its too complex to keep running by a novice. Its kind of not a daily driver at this point. Last edited by Thecastle; 12-06-2016 at 10:11 AM.. |

I'm running a minimum of 350whp as a daily, and think it needs more. Of course I pay attention to everything like warm the car up before I get on it, and general maintenance the average driver does not consider. I do drive around 600miles a week as well.

According to BPCs website stage one offers +67 WHP / +77 WTQ while stage 2+ offers +121 WHP / +175 WTQ. I dont see that being a small difference to lose the emissions equipment. Also, those are the most problematic parts on the car.

This what makes the 335D a uniquely well-qualified candidate for big power mods. The trans is solid (used in Ford F-150's) and the parts south of it are also up to the task. Anything up to around the 400-700 number range is easily doable, and is going to be MORE reliable than the stock setup with all the emissions crap.
Assuming of course, you don't get stupid and wreck it. |

I've been running over 400hp/600tq with meth on stock turbos with no issues whatsoever. And my car is nothing close to high maintenance, nor does it have a "ton of upgrades". Also, my meth system requires no maintenance aside from filling the tank
Those who are worrying about the transmission on these cars need to venture over to the gas forums a little more.... I just had a 600+whp N54 awd auto in my shop the other day and he beats on it all the time with no problems. These transmissions can take a lot more than they are rated for. |

Yeah it'll hold. Trust me
I haven't had issues. Car has been amazing for the last 6 months... That's why after 420whl/650 I'm leaving it alone, so happy with how it turned out. It all depends on the operator and maintenance. Besides that it's a diesel, she likes to be free... I'd say 950cc injection with egts never exceeding 950 degrees is a good sign. Also take into consideration with more power (freely flowing) you "get on it" less as far as RPM. I never full rip unless there's a loud creature beside me.... |

I'm more concerned with peak torque than peak power ... part of the reason I've been doing UOA's on trans fluid changes.
With great Torque comes great responsibility.

I'd say stage 2+ is on the low end for a daily driver. Putting meth in it puts you right at the upper end of daily driver territory. Both of those I would say are more reliable than stock anyways, as long as you maintain your car, and are fantastic mods. From there(Hybrid turbos, more boost, weight reduction, straight pipe out of the hood, etc.) it transitions more to a track car. Note that this is just how I feel and is my opinion. Other people will have other thoughts.

The caged gorilla gets out of the cage a lot less often once full grown. You can tell it always wants to get out though.

Most of these guys are more heavily modded than I am, but I've been running 2.5 tune for 15,000 miles now without a single issue. I'm still waiting for some free time to do meth, and that's where I will stop with power mods. For the past few weeks my daily commute has include about 20 miles of winding lake roads, and each day I am more confident that the D is one of the absolute best driver cars ever produced.

Just picked up a 2011 D with 56k miles (Sport, Deep Sea Blue/Black) and am excited to read via many of y'alls confirmations above, that an DPF, EGR, SCR delete and tune are all well within reliable limits.
I've already ordered an e9x M3 steering wheel, and aim to get some f80 513Ms on the car soon after doing an ///M suspension refresh :-D |

This thread makes me very happy that I purchased a 335D as my daily driver. I love that fact that modding this car actually makes it more reliable. When I tell people that they think I'm crazy because it's usually the opposite when adding mods. Would running a hybrid turbo setup be a good idea on a daily driver?

Like a lot of the guys stated previously you can get up to that 400 mark without hybrids. Personally I feel like hybrids would be overkill since their price and you would need a custom tune opposed to just giving in your DDE. As for the transmission I guess it boils down to how much you beat on your car too. If your always launching it and whatnot the life wil no doubt he lesser than average
