N52 Owners: Elec Water Pump Check-In Part Deux
In my original thread, I was most concerned with how many miles one could log prior to changing the water pump. What it didn't answer however was when your water pump actually failed so I'm creating a new poll and hopefully a Moderator will make this a 'sticky'
This is for N52 owners ONLY. Please vote yes IF and ONLY IF YOUR PUMP ACTUALLY FAILED. If you replaced it for precautionary (preventive maintenance) purposes, do NOT VOTE at ALL. This will skew the data. However do feel free to post details in a written response below. If you did replace your water pump (preventive or because of failure), please also provide the following info: a. year / model / transmission b. did it actually fail or was this preventive maintenance? c. how much did the repair cost (and indicate labor vs parts)? d. was it replaced at indy or dealer? e. was there any other damage caused as a result? f. do you track your vehicle? (DO NOT reply if you participate in canyon carving, street racing, etc.). strictly referring to auto-x, road course, drift and drag. Last edited by 3002 tii; 01-30-2014 at 10:25 AM.. |

On mobile so forgive me if I miss any info:
- 2006 330xi 6MT - pump failed - around 145k miles IIRC - around $500 for pump, tstat, bolts, and coolant from Tischer - did it myself (job itself is a breeze, getting to it is the b****. Lift helped - seemed to be an isolated issue - had not tracked it previously myself, but am the 3rd owner. Hooked on autoX now, let's hope it lasts

- 2006 330i (01/06 build)
- 122k miles - original pump - wife's daily driver since new, we ordered the 330i in order to get 6MT and options/color wanted I suppose I should replace it as a PM item at some point. Overall, this car has been amazingly reliable since new.

this poll would work better if you could account for multiple cars and change your answer.
wife's finally went. A. 06 325xi 6 speed B. 98,000 miles C. $531 for an overnight waterpump/tstat/bolts/coolant kit D. I'll be replacing it, I took off the underpanels last night. doesn't look too difficult. E. No damage, I did limp it home. temp stabilized at a rather high temp, but not really that much higher than the normal op. temp of an N52. F. Definitely never tracked I was planning on changing the DME to report the internal errors for the water pump as a SES light, but it failed the week before I was going to do that. So, I won't really know if that would have given us any more of a warning than basically failing suddenly. it's actually not that bothersome to me that the pump dies, it's more the mode of failure where it just stops working with zero warning. I'll be disassembling the pump as I'm curious to what fails. I've always wanted to know if they could be rebuilt. |
