Why NOT buy this CTS Catted DP?

There's an N55 catted DP for sale on in the classifieds, which the seller has been trying to get rid of for some time.

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2044109

I'm not trying to call the seller out by any means. But I'm curious why somebody hasn't purchased this yet.

Is there something wrong w\ the CTS Catted pipe in particular?

Aren't they only like $400 new? I havent heard anything bad about CTS but it wont pass emissions. And if you are paying PP fees + shipping you might be close to $300 for a used one

As long as the fitment is fine (your engine/chasis), no damage, and not a scam you should be fine. I would probly ask for a confirmation picture with tag/date and a pic showing the mounting points since theyre not visible w the packing peanuts.

In my opinion, the price is high for a used CTS.

you get a new one with a discount with a full warranty for a price not that much higher than what he is selling it for.

Thanks Mike,
I was thinking the same thing this morning prior to messaging you.
Now I'm rethinking the whole thing since I have to pass emissions.

If that's a concern, the active autowerke catted downpipe is the best option

Does this DP Pass visual inspection for CA smog? This won't give CEL and complete the "readiness" right?

The active autowerke does not trigger the check engine light, it uses EPA-approved GESI cats, so the monitors will be ready.

CA emissions is different than other states since its regulated by Carb and not EPA. Im not an expert on this subject to give you an accurate answer. I recommend checking with CA locals

It can in theory fail visual in California. As Mike noted any hardware installed on a vehicle in California needs to be CARB certified as opposed to EPA certified, which is why AA is noted as 49-state legal.

That said if you have the emission monitor ready, which it will do, you are unlikely to fail visual. That will come down to the shop doing the inspection. For context, i passed smog with fabspeed (functional and visual), which isnt certified at all but gets monitors ready like AA. Note that anything can fail visual that isnt CARB certified, so CP, IC, inlet, intake, etc.

I always wondered how visual checks work; we don't have it here so I'm not too familiar.

So the rep has a database that knows what the stock cat looks like on every single car on the market?

Yes, the database is on CARB's website. It lists the codes that are supposed to be stamped into the metal on every single catalytic converter by make/model/year/engine family. If they cant confirm your car has the correct cat, it can fail no matter if it passes everything else

The inspections is much more rigorous for pre-OBD2. It includes several functional tests - sniffer in exhaust to measure CO, HC, etc directly; gas tank pressurization test to make sure EVAP is working, EGR test, etc - since there are no ECU monitors to service those purposes. For my 3000gt, they literally used a mirror under the car to check the code stamped on the cat and went and check it in the database, and you can fail for the wrong cat even if you pass functional and visual.

For the OBD2 cars, they plug in and rely on the ECU to tell them if something is wrong, since the ECU is basically supposed to be doing those tests continuously. They of course also check for modified software now also, so that the ECU cant be modified to circumvent any of those checks or otherwise be tuned. When i did my 335i a few months ago, the tech commented on my inlet (but not IC, CP, or DP) cause i think he was looking at it like an "intake" and said they can fail for that but if it passes OBD2 hes good with it, since that data gets sent directly to CARB via the computer
