F1 2024: Austrian GP - Spielberg (June 30)

F1 2024: Austrian GP - Spielberg (June 30)

Schedule:
https://www.formula1.com/en/racing/2024/austria

Circuit:

Quote:
Spielberg
When was the track built?

The fearsome, original Osterreichring was originated in 1969 as a replacement for the Zeltweg airfield circuit. The track known today as the Red Bull Ring was more or less created over the winter of 1995-6, when Hermann Tilke was engaged to turn the Osterreichring into a shorter, more modern race track.
When was its first Grand Prix?

The A1-Ring, as it was then called, was opened in 1996, with Formula 1 arriving at the circuit a year later. Jacques Villeneuve won the race, while Jean Alesi had a spectacular crash when his Benetton climbed up the Ferrari of Eddie Irvine. Alesi’s team mate Gerhard Berger, meanwhile, used his home Grand Prix to announce his F1 retirement.
What’s the circuit like?

It’s only wee, bless it, but the Red Bull Ring packs a lot into a short lap. The first half rewards power, as the cars blast along three straights separated by a pair of uphill right-handers. But then as the drivers work their way downhill, the circuit becomes a regular toboggan ride, as the cars canyon through a series of quick corners, including the exhilarating Rindt right-hander, named for Austria’s first F1 champion.
Why go?

Race tracks don’t come much more picturesque than the Red Bull Ring, set in an idyllic natural bowl in the Styrian mountains. That makes for a pleasant environment for a Grand Prix, while if you’re after tourist attractions to visit after the race, look no further than the museum in Graz dedicated to the city’s favourite son: Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Where is the best place to watch?

One of Formula 1’s best views is to be had at the Red Bull Ring’s ‘Nord’ grandstand, based around the outside of what used to be the Bosch Kurve at the Osterreichring. Here, you’ll have a great vantage point across much of the track as it drops away from you down the natural slope of the circuit.

So what are your predictions?
Last week's race in Barcelona for showed that McLaren now has the fastest car on multiple tracks, but that winning has to be a team efford, and just the fastest car isn't enough.
Mercedes also now seems to have a car that can be fast on multiple types of tracks, but may still not quite match the RB20 car.
For me, it's now just a matter of time before winning races for McLaren will become a more normal occurance and that we can expect a battle pretty much every race between VER, NOR and possibly PIA, and both Mercedes car being a constant threat if one of the previous mentioned drivers makes a mistake.

My prediction:
1. VER
2. NOR
3. PIA
4. HAM
5. SAI
6. RUS
7. LEC
8. TSU
9. PER
10. GAS

Nor
Ver
Lec
Per
Ham
Sai
Rus
Pia
Gas
Oco

I think McLaren pulls together some better strategy this race. Checo returns to acceptable form based on his performance last year. Vcarb still struggles. Alpine continues to look fast. Aston still floundering.

RB's home track and I think they'll be a bit stronger here than Spain with more flowing corners and less slow speed corners.
I think Nor is due for some DNFs...
Ferrari likely to be quick here as they have been and Per will be back up to the podium I hope.

I think we might see a proper fight for the front here. Ver and Nor probably the front row. Then PIA and the mercs fighting over the rest.

Let’s all prepare for the 3000 seconds of track limits violations we will see as well

Checo goes well here too as he did last year, so I wouldn't say no to a RB 1-2

Canada is the best deal for me over here. I've heard Austin is way too crowded and traffic is bad. But, They have lots of entertainment.

Well that is positive. The wife and I are looking at going to Imola next year for the race and prices aren't bad. Can't believe how pricey the USA and Mexico races are. Freakin nuts!

Bit of a way for you though, how would you get there or would you book a package with a GP travel firm, I think they call it a staycation now.

Not many singing Viva Las Vegas with those prices and the most expensive only cater for well off biz'men there just to be seen and not real race fans, not

Both Montreal and Austin about 1600km from me so not far. I'd just fly in and wing it. Montreal would probably be easier with public transit and walking

You'd want to stay somewhere overnight, been there once ages ago not for a GP and saw the track, as you say the transit is modern day, it was when I was there with an underground train system also and Canadians are generally friendly with that French theme mixed in.

Normal racing move, pretty sure Sainz did the same to Leclair later
